Title: Ned Kelly
Post by: bigben on August 27, 2013, 08:36:35 AM
Hi All

Just dropping by quickly. (oooo TG3  ;)) Working in the Digitisation Centre at the University of Melbourne now and we've been gradually building up our 3D scanning capability. Relatively basic equipment (NextEngine scanner) but learning heaps as I push it to scan bigger objects than it's designed for.  I've been using TG at home to do some visualisations for promos and testing. Here's a recent scan we did of Ned Kelly's death mask from http://mdhs.unimelb.edu.au/harrybrookesallenmuseum (http://mdhs.unimelb.edu.au/harrybrookesallenmuseum). Just a basic surface to simulate the original texture and the composition is a rip off of a popular image of Percy Grainger (another of our museums) http://www.art-museum.unimelb.edu.au/assets/images/Exhs2007/xl-grainger_1933.jpg (http://www.art-museum.unimelb.edu.au/assets/images/Exhs2007/xl-grainger_1933.jpg).

Seeing your picture i think about it's possible impact if 2x5 meters large and hanging around well placed in some gallaries.

If you can sell it, it's art!

Thanks. This was primarily scanned as a pre-conservation record, but the museum is also looking to try and increase its "engagement" with fhe public and students. A difficult prospect when they're not open to the public because of the nature of the exhibits. TG's been quite useful for quickly creating demo images and animations, and it's one less bit of new software to learn. With a bit of luck they may even by me TG3 for work ;). Just got ZBrush... back to noob status for another software package.

This is timely. I just searched your name and your '123d catch'. I finally installed it... Sort of. There is till no mac version. But they have a browser app that I got a plugin for.

Not really in love with the results on line I have seen over all. I think its a good way to get a very detailed base mesh. You can also import directly into Mudbox and sculpt and paint over the mesh as one workflow. So hopefully Ill get something I like soon.

The chrome tools aren't too bad (pretty good for a browser based app), but I'd agree with your approach.  At least you have a lot of  images to use in mudbox.

No. Not sure what the defect in the mask is.
