The ground displacement is not really visible from this altitude but the colors themselves are just surface layers.

Wow!..I thought those were clouds...Thats really...Weird haha...Just the colours of the ground?

the planet has an atmosphere yeh?

Yes, it does have a thin atmosphere. The strange looking black distribution comes from the color being blended with the terrain associated with it. I've yet to work the scaling out so it looks rather strange in this render.
