Title: I call this one "I don't know how to name things"
Post by: blattacker on October 21, 2013, 07:32:07 PM
So I went back to the basics when I downloaded Terragen 3, cause I hadn't messed around in Terragen in a long time. Went for less interesting stuff going on, and started trying for closer to photo realism. I'm quite happy with what came out the other end, though I'm still not a fan of how my clouds look. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears. I'm thinking I should start putting more than one cloud layer for localized stuff, make it poofier, and have a bit more variation in the clouds. In any case, here it is! Tips and suggestions more than welcome!
(Imgur link because the .tiff was too big, and it took something like 8 hours to render, and I'm working on something else right now, haha)

A shame this didn't get any comments, I think it's actually quite promising and good for early work. The ground texture in particular looks good, but the whole image is quite dull (low brightness or something), so it's hard to see it well. I think the clouds might actually look decent with higher overall exposure/brighter sun (they look very gray now, instead of white/light gray). Some greater variation in scales would also help to break up the rough, noisy shape of them (perhaps increasing the Feature Scale for example). But mainly I think it's all just too dark and dreary. Brighten it up in some way (there are several options) and we'll be able to see more. As I said, the ground surface looks quite promising...

Absolutely!
Keep it up. There is great potential here. Once you get some of the kinks worked out you can decide what kind of ecosystem exists here. Then add plants and such. Every great image needs a great base, and as Oshyan said, the surface work here is good.

Cheers.

I do agree about the ground surface. very promising.  I would try to find another kind of cloud.

Jup, I'm also in on my flyby, your basic scene looks great.

But your nice base scene/structure just screams for some cinematic aspect ratios!
