Not a worik of art, an experiment! I've tried to find a way to soften and round off the edges of voronoi cracks for some time. Finally a eureka moment! I used 3 colour adjust nodes with gradually expanding sizes then used a multiply scalar to darken each successive node. The results work but I think there is room for experiment yet. Some interesting results can be achieved by using a multiply scalar on the end result the darker the output the softer the cracks. There is potential here but it is fiddly to achieve decent results and more experiments are called for.
nice work! Rock formations are cool too.
Are you using the PF voronoi or the blue node voronoi?
Hi Dune
For the voronoi cracks I'm using the blue node voronoi and PF voronoi for the basic rock forms
Here's the node setup all inside a surface shader which controls the distribution and displacement.
Yes, completely understandable. I see you have only one size voronoi. What you could do more to this is combine a few sizes, or use a PF as size input and use the color to set sizes (white as 11, black as 4 or so, for sizes 4-11). If you're into experimenting...
In the image I've used 3 of these. It is important that the same voronoi is used for each layer of colour otherwise there would be no softening of the cracks!
Hopes this explains the technique
great work and thanks for the explanation!
:)
looks really useful... and kinda pretty too!

Thank you for your ideas and experimentation. The results look promising.
Thanks all. Hope someone can use it

That being said, is it possible to get a .tgc from you to play with. I have been struggling to recreate this and having no good results. I even tried once to double-click on the jpeg node. :P What a dope I am!
My particular interest is to make a representation of polygonal tundra in the Arctic. The voroni functions seem perfect for this. I'm just off to a bad start.
Thanks for all the tips,
Russ
I'll post a tgc tomorrow!
I'd never heard of polygonal tundra, but google gave me some really interesting examples. Voronoi indeed. Looking forward to your render, Russ.
Just done the same astonishing.
It makes me think the whole world can be described by fractals.
Here's what I did a couple of years ago to describe how it forms. (no TG used) That is an actual photograph used in the background. The scientists tell me the volume of ice under ground is really that much in some places. The ice wedges grow like a tree. They start forming in crack from the ground freezing. They grow for centuries.
I think this pattern is like the dry mud in a desert scene. Can you see the voroni coming in handy here?
The ponds in the middle of the cells are real too.
You see now why soils thawing in the Arctic an change things dramatically.

This won't be too hard to put together, if you need any help, shout.
I just watched a Duracell battery TV ad. I believe somebody has been messing with Voronoi cells.

Just checked File Sharing and could not find the promised .tgc....ever get around to posting it?
