Feels gigantic! I think you made the displacements huge, to get the terrain surface near the upper atmo? Perhaps you can reverse thAT and get the effect you wanted without making the terrain feel extra super big.

For example, is it possible to  "shrink" the atmo down to near the surface, rather than bring the surface up to the atmo?.. If that make sense?

OK, if you want I give you my unbiased opinion; I think your terrains are often a bit 'exxagerated', and not really 'natural'. Take it with a pinch of salt, mind you, I don't mean it negative, as I do like your cerativity in these planets. But I think if you make the terrains more credible and detailed, you win a lot of realism. The background also looks like a background and in this case isn't the highest resolution I think. You might consider a mix of background and atmospheric clouds.
I hope this helps, without meaning to offend.

Hi,
two other aspects because you asked:
The ring of the second planet/moon would look more interesting in my opinion if one would see it under some angle instead of directly on the edge. And maybe some less symmetric overall composition would fit the dramatic content better. Just my impression. I like the combinaton of spiky mountains and tabular fragmented landscape around them.
My Best Regards,
J

I wonder if you increase your Cache/ Bucket size at render if that will stop that clipping of the terrain on the right hand side.
That is not your fault, but may have an answer on the fix.

A litmus test for me when someone asks "what do you think" is could this scene be photographed?  I don't mean from a literal perspective as this is obviously fantasy, but from a pure photographic standpoint, assuming one could indeed take this picture, would it actually look like that?  I'd say no and here's why:

The biggest problem is the overall sky.  It would be pretty much impossible to expose for that sky with all the stars and galaxies while also exposing for the foreground terrains.  Take a look at real photos from at extreme altitudes and you'll see what I mean.

The only way to do it would be to composite two photos together shot at different times of day/night.  Having said that, maybe photorealism isn't the goal here and you just want to create a fun fantasy image and in that respect I think it works well though as others have mentioned perhaps some of the displacements could use some additional work around the edges of the frame, but I'll still maintain from a pure photographic perspective this would be impossible to shoot as presented even if you really were "standing there".

Hi Greg,

Since we don't know how far this planet is from its parent star, it could be that the landscape really is very dark. What about Oort Cloud objects for example?

+ if you try to photograph under such circumstances then the digital camera usually messes up the white balance, because of metering issues due to lack of light, thus in a way it isn't that unrealistic perhaps...
