Title: Adding text labels to a scene
Post by: mrjrdnthms on January 24, 2014, 02:26:46 PM
My goal is to export a sequence of images rendered from a terragen scene. Something like the camera moving across some terrain. I got that workflow up and running and now I want to add some text labels to the scene. Ideally the text would be something like 2D billboards that are placed in the scene and move as the camera passes by. Attached is a image rendered. I added the text in photoshop to give a sense of what I am after.

I can't add the text to each image in the sequence with photoshop because I want it to move with the scenery. Any thoughts on a good way to approach this?

Some video editing software has a motion tracking feature that lets you mark up a spot and add text/popups. One example is Videostudio (feature as shown here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuVKHjbB1HU). That's probably better than trying to add the text into the scene itself in TG.

I was thinking something like Otakar said. I would do this in after effects.

However,
if you really want to, or just have to do it in TG (may look cool), you could simply make all your graphics in PS, and then put them in TG as billboards. Use the card object or make a 6 sided plain- like- object, and apply your graphic to that. Then you can hang them anywhere in the scene you like.

If you try the billboard way, I think your supposed to use a .png. I don't really know for sure though. ANd remember that the Board is a 2D effect. As long as your cool with it being 2D, it should work. If you want 3D, you'll need to bring in to TG 3D models of your words, or do it in post.

Nice image in the OP by the way.

Yes, I would do as Badger says. Should work. Also a tif with alpha channel should work, Untick 'unpremultiply color' in the default shader, and untick 'shadows' in the card object.
