Title: reflective shader issue
Post by: Dune on January 31, 2014, 10:40:38 AM
Can anyone explain what happens here? I never used the soft reflections in an RT reflective shader, but got this when I tried; a blocky result. Upping samples didn't help (right one has 8 samples, while softness is 0.1).

Might be worth looking at the "Render subdiv settings" inside the render node and check "force all edges" and up the Ray detail multiplier ...

Softness at 0.1 with 8 samples is really undersampling, see here:

Thanks, guys. So the slider is really 'overdone',  it slided to 0.8, so I figured that would be not too bad. I'll experiment with lower settings. As said, never used it before, but if it takes so long, I doubt I'll use it much. No patience  ;)

Yes you're absolutely right about that.

If you use reflection softness to get nice soft reflections in water then any value below 0.005 is fine.
For this you already need 8 samples to be sure no artefacts show up (parallel lines in the reflection).
