Title: I'm looking for high resolution UK height maps
Post by: cyphyr on February 02, 2014, 11:20:01 AM
I've looked at the Aster DEM and SRTM and the free OS maps and they are all ok (very good actually) but I'm looking for even higher resolution ones. Preferable in the 1m vertical range. Any ideas?
Cheers
Richard

Me too but I suspect if they are available they cost!

The OS Terrain 50 (https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/opendatadownload/products.html) is pretty good. Hassle to put together though since it comes in hundreds of tiny pieces that have to be put together.

Richard, I have been looking for years for even vaguely usable UK data... suffice to say, anything that is usable, you'd have to take out a hefty mortgage to be able to afford. We buy quite a lot of OS CAD data in work. When you buy the CAD file for a specified area, you are given the option to buy the height data too (at a very reasonable price if I remember) I think it's at 5m spacings and is x,y,z CSV format (I might be wrong about the format though) Run it through surfer etc and you have a 5m grid heightfield. The only problem is the cost of the CAD data that goes with it :-( If I can find the links to this data I'll post them here.

Richard, I've been having a rummage on my copious hard drives (4.5TBs worth) and I've found a bucket load of OS Land-Form PANORAMA Contours data (I think it's most of the UK, if not all of it). They are 20000m squares of dxf contour drawings . The only problem is they have a grid on them, so you have to open them up in a CAD program and remove the grid and grid text, save them, run them through something like DXF to XYZ, then run that output through something like Surfer or Quickgrid, then open that data in something like Global Mapper to get it out as a .ter file (though you might be able to skip the last part if Surfer can output a Geotiff) Problem being, there are 812 files making up 4.6GB of dxf data :-( I'm Going to give a random one a go now. If I get anything usable out of it I'll post the resulting file here in a bit :-)

Richard, I have done an OS tile (SN64) converted it etc and dumped it in my dropbox ( https://www.dropbox.com/s/hh1wfwxz40czihp/export%20test.zip ) Give it a go and see if it's the type of thing you want. If so, as long as you can give me the OS tile Ref of where you want, I can do it for you.

Hi Mr M :)
Sorry not to have gotten back to you earlier. I have been traveling all day. I already have these files, they are free from the OS (under their license). One issue with these is that at low altitudes there is very little difference between heights and you tend to get a "stepping" effect. The OS 50 Terrain (linked to above) has twice the vertical resolution.
Thanks for your effort.
Cheers
Richard

No worries. I didn't know if I was teaching my grandmother to suck eggs or not  ;) I'll have to look at the OS50 terrain dataset, have a good play with it (after the 1.1GB download :-(
