Title: Camera rotation with Geo referenced terrain
Post by: mash on March 02, 2014, 05:50:49 PM
Just wondering if  I am missing a step.
I downloaded a geo tiff and image overlays from the USGS data center.
http://viewer.nationalmap.gov/viewer/

Loaded the data into TG3 with Georeference turned on.
Selected the render camera and right moused clicked to "Center on imgn45w122_13.img shader"
That's the terrain loader.
Camera moves to the geo referenced terrain.
First problem I have is I have to move and rotate the camera around for a few minutes because usually the camera moves to someplace under the ground.
Not a big deal but a bit weird because at first all you see is gray with no sense of direction.

Got the camera pointed at the terrain.  Now I want to rotate the camera to the right.
I can't do it. If I try the camera just rotates around on it's Z axis. It's like it's banking instead of rotating.
I tried the navigation controls with the same results.
Any idea what's going on and can it be made easier to use?

Also can we get a season and time of day adjustment for the sunlight?
At the moment it's more guess work than anything else when trying to position the sunlight with georeferenced terrain.
Thanks.

There are two ways you can solve this.

A) The awkward camera movements are due to being somewhere on the planet that's far away from the "top" or "apex" of the planet, so the surface is tilted with respect to the XYZ axes. You can get more freedom in your camera orbiting by turning on "Free Orbit Mode". There's a button for this on the bottom row of the 3D Preview. Normally, whenever you orbit the camera (Alt-LMB with default preferences), 'heading' is constrained around the Y axis and 'bank' is fixed. If you turn on Free Orbit Mode, orbiting is happens with respect to the current camera rotation and you can also bank the camera by Alt-LMB dragging the mouse around the edge of the 3D Preview. When you're doing this, imagine that you're dragging the surface of an invisible ball in the 3D Preview. Dragging the edges of the ball rotates the ball, i.e. banks the view.

Or...

B) If you put your georeferenced terrains at the "top" or "apex" of the planet, everything becomes much simpler. To do this, follow these steps:
