tower model created by me
comments / suggestions welcome
decided to use RTA on this iteration.
this one came out a bit weird
still like it tho'
setting sun iteration, with RTA.
render time: 3:43:51s
I like the foreground structure, and the sunset version very much.
I think some kind of inhomogenity (do you say so?) to the haze, like very low density low altitude clouds could further improve this, making the sky look less like a simple color gradient.
My best regards,
J
Wow that terrain looks awesome!!
i could share a tgc file of the terrain & shaders if anyone is interested.
Yes pls ;)
Ahhh yes! Image 1 rocks are just great looking! Do share!
here ya go!
ive included the heightfield in case you wanted it, but i disconnected it if you dont want it.
yipeee :D
I like especially the last one Lane.
Mahnmut: how low? like nearly right on the ground?
how does this look?
I like your rock structures. Very well done.
Nice work. I'm not a fan of SciFi images but this one has a certain something!
overnight render.
5:49:56s 12,156,583 triangles
C&C welcome
Magical! Really like the subtle light effect and puffs of cloud! Great!
this will be a submission to the 621 gallery in my town.
which one should i submit?
the day time one (first render)
or
the evening one (the last render)
Last, definitively.
I'd go for the last one.Definitely!
Edit:oops,thinking alike it seems ;)
Definitively ;)
Think about it hanging on a wall (Preferably matted and framed). If you go with the last one, you will essentially be hanging half an image since the botom part is near black. Compositionally, this is a serious mistake. It breaks the rules of composition with no benefit structurally, or aesthetically or in meaning.
I do like the darker foreground and lighter background. But imo you need to rethink the composition if you want to use the last one. Because if this is a juried exhibition, I think your technical achievement will be overwhelmed by the lack of fundamentals in the scoring process.
IN both cases there is no apparent reason to ignore the rules of thirds. And in the second image, the point of focus (the background), is treaded exactly equal to the foreground, which as I said is really dark. It does not make sense conceptually or compositionally.
By splitting the image in half it looks like you could not decide what you really wanted to focus on, so you focused on both.
im thinking ill use the daytime one.
you can see rock formations a bit better in that one
im thinking ill use the low clouds from the darker one unless any one has any objections.
Objection, your honor! What if you tilt it up and have 1/3 bottom? I like that light in the dark one much better. Or have something subtle happen in the dark, a glow of rock or something.
Agree with Ulco. I did not mean to discourage you Zlain! I never mean to do that! I only wanted to push you a little to apply more, sort of, traditional aesthetics to you technical work.
Both your images are great. But I just wanted to ask you if they could be better presented, or not? Thats all.
hows this?
Almost got an old skool bliss effect going on there!
Sweet. :)
Could even throw in some kinda bounce lights to subtly illuminate a few choice spots in the foreground if your feeling fancy.
yea i like the upward pointing blueish rays effect, came across that by accident, unintentional.
might as well start that big render soon.
one more with a small light source
C&C please
I really like this..........the only thing that I see is your cloud layer is noisy...........but that may clear up with a higher res render. :)
yes, it looks a lot better at hi res & higher detail levels

Looking good as a composition, I'd say. How about some tiny pinpricks of light on the dark rock, like minerals sparking in the flash. Not too much, just a dozen or so. Or a slightly illuminated very subtle vein of mineral.
66hrs in... about half way in... not sure if this one is gonna make the dead line :/
How big is that thing?
2400 x 1800
im using RTA, thats whats taking so long.
That's not very big at all. High settings?
detail .75
AA 5
Hmmm, 66 hours already. Slow machine then? No I can read your specs..... strange....
keep going or abort?
Well, I like it. SO I would want to see it finished even if you can't get it to the exhibition. But if you dont have time then you dont have time. Although, thats a pretty high quality sky, maybe the terrain will render faster? What part of it has taken the longest so far?
Edit
Actually I like it a lot after looking again. Thats pretty darn nice boy! I say finish if you can.
yes, sky/atmo is what took it so long, all those rays, when it got to the terrain, the pace changed.
i could have the opportunity to display it elsewhere, there's another smaller gallery nearby where i live maybe they'll like it ;)

Besides, you will want to do post work, even if just minor (like removing grain perhaps) And anyway, you will want to take a little time and just sit with the image and decide how you think about it? Cant rush greatness! On the other hand, if you feel strongly that its good to go... Then go baby go!
Render on, it's going to be great. Especially if it's going faster now. But I still wonder if it could have rendered faster with other settings, it's a long time, despite the atmo.
-UPDATE-
Turns out the deadline wasn't last Saturday, the info on the website was wrong apparently. ??? (I have a couple weeks left according to the director)
went to gallery621 to submit my stuff on saturday, spoke to an employee about submissions, she seemed a little confused, told me usually people send artwork via email, im guessing she was thinking of something different.
Well thats really good. Like finding 50 bucks in your pants pocket when you thought you were broke and had no idea it was there. ;D
So is this a juried in person art exhibition then, or just a juried contest? It is normal to only submit slides or digital images for a contest. But obviously an exhibition requires art ready to hang.
And what is the prize, and for what categories? And out of yet still more curiosity, who are the judges?
Yes, it's juried, there was no mention of any kind contest or prize.
The digital images will not be used exhibition, but as samples for the juries.
I don't know who the judges are, what I do know the director lives about 2 blocks from where I'm living now ;) (I recently moved back into town)
Aside from this EPIC render that's been going on for over the last 7.5 days, the other issue was the resume & struggling to write a cover letter/artist's statement before the deadline.
I'm quite certain this exhibition has any categories
if I make ill have all my printed and framed.
I think I'm probably the only one doing this sort of thing, digital landscapes with TG, most people just use traditional mediums like paint or pastel.
Good luck.............. :)
thanks :)
OT, heres some of the weird shit I was doing in my early TG / pre TG days ;)
more,
Quotestruggling to write a cover letter/artist's statement before the deadline.
I was reading about H. R. Giger. His manager was answering a bunch of questions in a write up. He said that artists statements are pointless. Because,
"if the work needs to be explained than the artist did something wrong, or the one looking at it is an idiot." ;D I hate writing that stuff too. I do like reading them though, that is where you learn how full of shit an artist it.
But if you really have to do one and are having some difficulty deciding what you want to talk about. There are a number of guides online, even books if you are feeling particularly masochistic today. At least they may help you narrow and shorten the statement.
I would just quote H.R's manager though.
I like your 2d stuff by the way. You are an interesting guy Z! And you are making me want to get re involved in local art communities.
i finished writing them actually.
Nice work, Zlain. I don't like writing art statements either. Often, if you have painted something and are obliged to do some writing, you actually have to think about what you produced 'unconsiously', and it only covers part of the 'hidden meaning' everyone will interpret differently. Real art should make the viewer think, not the artist, IMHO.
HR Geiger influenced me when i was younger, around when 18-20yrs old, but i grew out of him after high school, right around the time i headed in the digital direction.
didnt paint much, preferred drawing more.
Finally, at last, it's done.
C&C welcome
I like it Lane.I would crop it just a little wider or vertical to see how it might look too.
I just made one for my desktop :)
will do
It's grand! The light is really blinding, and I like the one little pinprick of light on the tower. That gives it just that little extra suspense.
I think it worked out good too. Really good.
a wide version for Kadri

Yeah, meto. I was thinking about the next part of prometheus movie and thought to look and see if HR had done anything new. Thats when I found that funny quote. And as it turns out, HR has not done crap since I was in high school.
Sorry for the late post, I just saw yours.
I like the crop.
I admire and am curious how your foray into the 'formal' art scene will fare. Often when rubbing shoulders at Art Openings with 'Academic' folks, they express a sense of confused condescension (certainly not all) towards work created with computer/software tools. Sort of like the mid 1800's when photography emerged as first a journalistic tool and only received 'art' status after decades of wonderful work. The question of what is from the artist and what is from the technology. Curious as to what sort of feedback you've gotten? Nobody can question the skill and artistic talent exhibited by the folks at ILM, Pixar, Weta, etc., yet I still sense that the concept of "one artist, one computer" paradigm has yet to be embraced by the Gallery cognoscenti. Sorry to go on, but it has been a keen topic in my experience. I truly like the image. It's compositionally simple, but strong with light and energy, a sense of vision transcending the earthly. I would hope that the judges recognize what a fine piece of Art you have presented, good luck!
Lane you rock!! 8)
this has been great!
and what a lovely clip too!!
cheers
