Title: Hello to all! First try at Terragen 3
Post by: Darknight on April 22, 2014, 01:35:15 PM
Hello all,
I have been pretty much a Vue user for a very very long time, mainly because of ease of use and compatibility with the software I use. But of late I have been looking at all the Terragen work you guys have been doing, and quite honestly my mind is blown at how amazing this software is, in capable hands. So I manned it up and am now trying to learn Terragen 3. Here goes my first try,  a simple scene with a terrain I created in world Machine. I barely knew what I was doing, but am beginning to understand how Terragen works. But still not yet figured out adding foliage, and other populations. :-[

Thanks for checking the post! :)

Thanks Kadri! Really liking Terragen so far. Still figuring out shading and populating.

Very impressive, especially for a first (public) image. You already have some very nice surface texturing and a good blend of complexity in your clouds. Populations should be pretty easy to get started on. Perhaps post another thread with any questions you have?

Wow, if this is your first attempt I can't wait for the follow-up. This is some intricate setup here and a great result!

I love the blue texture on the left wall. I am curious how that would hold up at a small scale?!

That's a really old tutorial. Not sure if it's inaccurate at this point, so it may still give you useful basics, but after going through it, definitely look through the Wiki and the forums for more current info.

Looks really sharp!  What detail settings did you use?

Hi,

Great first effort! There is a guide to working with populations here:

http://www.planetside.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=Populator_Guide

The "Working with Populations" is the best one for you to check out at this stage.

Regards,

Jo

I am very thankful for all the pointers guys! I am fiddling with them whenever I get some time :)

I will render them out closer and post it, so we can take a look.

I used a setting of 3 for details and 3 for Anti Aliasing.

Detail of 3 is quite unnecessary. If you max it to 0.8 you'll be fine for most renders.

Holy cow, this is not bad for someone who didn't know what he was doing!
Welcome to this community. You won't regret this.
You wrote you set Detail to 3? 3.0? This is insanely high. For a beauty render normally 1.0 is enough. Maybe there are very rare exceptions where you may go a little higher, but remember even an increase of 0.1 units has a big impact on rendertimes.

Thanks, I had no clue about that!

Thanks man. Much appreciated. I can already feel that vibe in here :) Just going through old threads and reading up on them has helped me so much. Maybe I should read up some threads on optimizing render settings.

Old threads are a gold mine! That's how I started out; reading, reading, reading and experimenting.....
