In his own words, Ray Wiley Hubbard tells the true story that inspired the writing of this song. In part, it is a backlash to "Okie from Muskogee" by Merle Haggard even though the event actually took place in Red River New Mexico. The remark at the end of the story was made by one of those "cosmic cowboys" who died too early in life. I actually got to see one of his concerts in college. My school held the concert on a Friday afternoon in the auditorium where they held chapel on Wednesdays. Here is one of his songs.
