Title: Too Shiny
Post by: Kadri on August 22, 2014, 03:50:11 AM

Yesterday i saw a desktop wallpaper on my computer that had shiny wet stones.
I suddenly wanted to do something similar.
I had already stones from my well animation project
( http://www.planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,18726.msg182605.html#msg182605 )
I just made another big fakestone node and all i had to do was putting reflection and a little water to it.
For a 15 minute work it took 20 hours to render.
Could be faster but i had no hurry.
It is not my style but still i kinda like it.
Looks like a casual shot bad photo to me but i don't know what you think.

Looks cool, Kadri. The only thing that makes me think that it's CG is the sharp and sometimes triangular edges of some of the stones.

Thanks and yes i think the same Hannes.
But there are sometimes so crazy things out there i think we are kinda biased from that aspect :)
This was a hastily thrown together scene anyway.
If i was more serious about this scene i would try more seeds or mask some of those stones.
The fun part with this scene was that how much the appearance can change in Terragen with just 1-2 different adjustments.

I am trying another one with this scene just now. Not sure how that one will be.

You probably used RT reflection? That's taking ages indeed, especially on fine displacements. But it looks good, apart from the triangular stones. Try a small displacement offset in your texture PF, that blows up the stones.

Yes it is RT reflection Ulco.
I was rendering 2 different images but after 14 hours  they are still only at the half.
One doesn't look much encouraging the other...maybe. Will see :)

Thanks :)

The other images below didn't came out good at all.
But just for closure and the wasted render time i am still posting them here.
At least it was kinda a different exercise and break from the well animation.

No ray trace reflection in these -i think- .
It took too long and there is still grain.
Some tests were over 20 hour long and still half finished when i stopped them.

The last one was more along the line of my style (if i have any)
But even some clouds that i liked in my other renders turned out bad here.
Especially lighting and color is heavily postworked in all of them

Copying and pasting different project parts doesn't work always because
of the different lighting, camera angle etc.

I actually quite like test_01, and test_04 is quite nice too.

3 and 4 for me kadri!
Love the almost surreal/sci-fi feel/mood here!

I like the first image here. With a weak back-lighted sun at low altitude would improve it even more.
