Title: Displacement pointers
Post by: bigben on August 23, 2014, 05:51:32 AM
Hi All

I'm actually working on producing a finished product for a change instead of tinkering with different bits. I need some help (or pointers to good clips) with cliff displacements. Most of of the other stuff I have in hand. The attached image is a starting point based on the Canyon from the preset pack.  I'll keep browsing through the file sharing section and testing bits out, but if anyone has any suggestion I'd be grateful for some ideas.

Base terrain is the Grand Canyon http://files.bigben.id.au/terragen/terrains/us/grand_canyon/GrandCanyon_main.tif (http://files.bigben.id.au/terragen/terrains/us/grand_canyon/GrandCanyon_main.tif)
Working a bit better now that I'm starting without fractal detail.  The stretched displacements on the cliffs were causing me headaches.

To add to the challenge it also has to be relatively efficient for rendering as it's going to be an animation.

Double strata and outcrop shaders at different angles and some cracks from soft voronoi to hard edged - all very stretched.

I would build it up very carefully and don't use too small displacements, as they won't be seen in an animation anyway.

Ben, are you already using the suggested render settings from the Check Animation button?

Yep. Figured there was a good reason for it.  :)
Running some small animations to see the effect of some of the displacement settings. Toying with 2 strata nodes with a broad lateral displacement in between

Ok, I think we're going to be adjusting those settings for the next release, so it may be best not to turn them on until you're actually ready (or closer) to render the animation. I mention it because that cliff face looks like it's suffering from some issues with one of those settings (turning off Fully Adaptive I think).

Thanks Oshyan

That actually made a lot of difference, and I've come back to this as a starting point again.
