Title: Looking for a "Rock Displacement Library"
Post by: cyphyr on August 23, 2014, 04:29:55 PM
I'm looking for a "Rock Displacement Library" full of images that could be used in Terragen (of course) but more particularly in Sculptris.  They have a small selection on the Sculptris site but I'm sure I have seem a very much more extensive collection.

I've also sen a stack of rock images that have been converted to grey scale but these won't do the trick since their shadows and highlights get interpreted as low and high displacement.

Any suggestions?

Ta muchly ... :)

Richard

Hey richard,

http://www.surfacemimic.com/gallery/gallery.php?mode=gallery&id=NTcxZTFlNzA4MzBj&page=1
http://area.autodesk.com/mudcom/stamps?where=3&mudlife_catg=&time=&order=created-d&x=-1269&y=-93&word=rock

Should get you off to a nice start on your collection.

Let us know if there is something very specific you are looking for.

Crap, I see now that that first link wants money. Sorry about that.
here, this should make up for it. http://quoteko.com/textured-rock.html

Thankyou. Yes it's the 3d Surface scans that fit the bill, it might even be the site that I am remembering. $5 an image is steep and there are only a few to choose from. Mind you they are HUGE.

You see what I mean though, these are height maps effectively, no shadow or highlight which seems to be a normal consequence of simply taking a grey scale of a simply photo.

I'm surprised that there are not more available.

EDIT: just found this BITMAP2MATERIAL (http://www.allegorithmic.com/products/bitmap2material) which is the business. And at $50 it's almost a no brainier ... checking the demo now ... which crashes on launch :(

I suppose you need them for sculpting in sculptris and not for texturing, aye?
In case you want to sculpt rocks and stuff for use in TG you could produce
your own alphas with TG and thus have some fitting surface textures also.

And there is a little trick to get rid of the shadows and highlights - to a certain
degree, that is - with the high pass filter in PShop. There's a tut that describes
the technique,if you are interested I can see if I can find it again and post a link.
But some experiments should do,it's easy.

You could put a piece of rock on a flatbed scanner, that lighting should be very good to light heights and darken deeps. Mind the glass though.

Yeah, I was not sure why not just make them in PS. Since that is going to be the usual way. But then again, if I had a pressing need and a few bucks to throw at it, I would just by a nice collection.
http://www.asilefx.net/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=163 not sure if this is what you want, but its a nice set of rock faces.

Scanning is a good way to go, Ulco. That is a very old and very good trick for a number of things!  :)
I remember back long long ago ;) Scanning some object in the way you are saying was cutting edge to get elements for design work in PS. HA! Its still a good idea.

Not too shabby, that's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. Now to ponder if I can afford $30 ...

Ahh good! Well if you do buy, please tell us what you find!! Its pretty tempting. And I would expect that the variations you could get when sculpting would be in the tens of millions

Hey Richard,

I just downloaded the free sample pack. It contain a pdf of all of their stuff in the paid download including a image of how the brush/stamp/stencil looks sculpted.

Will look at it now, let me know what you think of this pack for 30 bucks. Anything in it strike you as not worth it? All I know is that if I were to make this many stamps from scratch on my own, it would take me a long time. Also interested in using this pack to mix and match to create original vector stencils.

Just tried the lower resolution samples, works perfectly! Going to shop around first though. Want to see if anyone has stone faces like in the $5 dollar each link from above. I have been looking for faces like that forever for TG.

Thanks for making me look into this Richard! Im all ideas and no energy. but this got me going!

This is all of the ten you get for free in the sample (1000x1000 or so samples)

Hey TB
Only just saw your set of replies.
I don't know how I missed the sample pack, it may be all I need for now. I'm into a new project now that needs more towers so hopefully ...
Are you using Sculptris or ZBrush?
The monster pack looks fabulous ... if I wanted to make monsters and understood ZBrush !!  And I'm not too sure how I'd actually use the full terrains.
Cheers for the research :)

Hi Richard,
I seem to remember a bit of software called "Crazybump" I think. Hang on a minute...
Found it http://www.crazybump.com/ (http://www.crazybump.com/) Don't know if this is the type of thing you were looking for?

I worked with that for a while, but don't know why I stopped using it, actually. Maybe because the demo stopped or had limitations. Looks good, in fact. I now use pixplant for normal/bump maps.

Ulco, funnily enough, I was the same, used to use it years ago (I think mainly with Terragen 0.9), it was still beta, pre 1.0 version. I think I stopped using it because the demo ran out too :-) I seem to remember that it did a damn good job though.

oh man. I have the mac demo still. It is free. I used it a few times and sorta forgot about it too. never thought to make alpha brushes with it!  ;D really good idea. thank you.
