Title: Just curious...
Post by: archonforest on August 28, 2014, 11:53:04 AM
What TG is doing right before finishing a render? Like in the last 5-10 sec.? Usually I can do other things with my PC while rendering but just before the render finishes the computer kinda "freeze" for 10sec. Then when the render finishes all good.

Calculating the deeper shadows of GI, as far as I can tell.

Hmmm...and to calculate that need more cpu power? ???

Could be.  Perhaps because it's also retiring the processes that were being used to do the normal rendering and clearing memory that was being used as well.  Oshyan would know more, but I do notice that after the rasterization pass, shadows are added in an almost post-processing-like way after that little hiccup at the end.

Yeah I also noticed that shadow changes at the end.
Oshyan? If u read this can u enlighten us :D

It's the calculation of GI surface details. I guess it's worth the waiting.

Hannes is largely correct. GISD is partly applied during rendering, but there is also a step at the end that finalizes GISD.

Is this the message I get that says, "not responding" and then in a few seconds it says "finished?  I thought it was my computer somehow messing up.   :)

I think so. And I have to say I love this moment. When the render is almost finished and looks already good, then there's this moment when you think something's wrong, because the time indicator stops. That's the moment when I'm staring at the screen without blinking (trying hardly not to drool) and then Tataaaaaa! Magic GISD!!
I tend to increase the occlusion weight to 1.5 or even to 2 sometimes. Doesn't look good always, but most of the time. At least to me.

Yes, it's kind of frozen.... You beat me, Hannes.  I always like that moment, but occasionally, especially with a crop, it takes ages. I once had a 13 minute crop render, then 4 minutes for the GISD to finalize.

I never think "magic moment"..........I think, "oh, crap, I am going to lose this whole thing!!!!!"   Now that I know differently, I can relax.  Thanks.
