Title: Sailing ship
Post by: Hannes on September 01, 2014, 03:55:22 PM
This is a WIP and it's already animated. It's a mix of Oleg's ocean foam pattern settings and a lot of stuff I already created for the first NWDA competition. I always wanted to improve my attempts to create convincing animated ocean water. Not sure if I got really further. Still adjusting some things. I'll keep you informed. Could be something to try Pixel Plow.

Here is an image of the water settings. The left part is the one Oleg shared. The rest is created by me, but I took bits and pieces of other files, so I'm not quite sure who else is to credit.

Agree with Yossam. Any chance of you posting a short clip?

Hey Hannes, that is looking great. I looked at your node setup and ask: what are those green dots next to nodes? I assume they are for referencing - great idea if that is the case. If so, how do you do that?

Looks great Hannes. Waiting for the animation :)

Thanks guys. At the moment I am rendering a short low quality clip. This takes a while, but I'll show it asap.
Bob, the green dots indicate that a shader is animated. They appear automatically. I don't know if they also show up when other things are animated. Anyway I didn't have to put them in ;)

Thanks for explaining Hannes. I thought it would be a good way to remind oneself that we've made a change to a node.

I like the idea. :)

To speed up animating, you might want to try non-transparent water, but a deep bluegreen color variation. Maybe on this distance you'll get away with it.

Yes, I'm still testing some settings. This might be a good idea. I like the surface of the original water shader. Is there a difference (regarding render times) between a water shader without transparency and a regular surface shader with a reflective shader applied?

Depends on the roughness of the water, in what I tested. But a small crop render will reveal the truth!

How big do you want to render it Hannes? What is the render time of one frame?

This is really well done. The water is superb and the rocks very good. I like the painterly feel to the picture. looking forward to the animation.

Thanks!!
The render as you can see it here took about one hour. I'd love to render it as large as possible, but it depends on the prize of course. It's just 100 frames, so it shouldn't be too expensive.
But the larger the renders are, the more you will see all the flaws ;)

LOL! Joke or not but that is what i feel when i am waiting for a larger render to finish.
Sometimes it feels like a lottery when the big one looks like the small render.
If it looks better that is the big price :D

Great job, Hannes. I hope that you get what you have in mind with the animation.

Thanks. Digitalis99 is out for a vacation at the moment, so our Pixel Plow/Paypal test has to wait for a while, but I am rendering the animation at 600 X 337px on my own machine. I had to restart the whole thing, because I had forgotten something >:(.
I'm at frame 55 of 100 right now. I'll post the animation when it's done.

Had to throw the animation away.  >:( Forgot some other things...
But here is a lousy little preview animation. No clouds, no shadows, just to see if it's OK so far. The wet shader's minimum altitude is adjusted in the middle of the animation, that's why it's popping.
It's only slightly more than 2MB, so I didn't post it on Vimeo. I hope the quality is OK for seeing what's going on.

I forgot to mention that I used some default shaders instead of the water shaders, so I hope the final animation will look a bit more natural.

I like the animation Hannes.Wish it was longer.

In the animation i am just making you would be surprised how much things i forget.
One with the Sun was the stupidest mistake.
I unchecked "Visible disc" and shadows but not "Glow in atmosphere".
The sun still showed up of course(without a sharp spherical look).
With half HD frame size that wasn't nice.

The lower left part of the water feels kinda like a current.
When do you think can you finish this in the render farm?

Yes, the Terragen Animation section here in the forum:

Btw I still have to tweak this file before I'll upload it to Pixel Plow.

i was absolutely thrilled about this perfect renderings of a ship in the sea  (from 2014 !) - i tried to understand and to learn how the settings are made. But the attached original JPEG is to small to read the content - is there anybody who can help me ?

Welcome to the forum. I can't help you read the shaders, but I can tell you that the left block is a foam setup once shared by Dandel0. It should be available somewhere in the file sharing section: https://planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/board,57.0.html (https://planetside.co.uk/forums/index.php/board,57.0.html)
What the rest does, I don't know, and I'm afraid Hannes has left the forum (and TG). If you have any specific questions, do ask. But a lot can be learned (and downloaded) from older posts. Just ask the right questions in search and read, read, read.
