Title: Lichens Shader?
Post by: PabloMack on September 13, 2014, 10:54:20 PM
The thread started by wolle reminded me of an experience my wife and I had in California last year. I was supposed to race back home and start a new thread about lichens. I forgot to and didn't remember until now. But first a little background.

We visited some friends of my wife's and spent a week touring the area North of Los Angeles before the SVP meetings. We spent a day hiking a national monument called "The Pinnacles" where the California Condor once nested and we did end up seeing two soaring over the peaks as we were on our way back to the parking lot. But now to the point, on our hike we saw these rocks covered by a variety of wonderful lichens and I got to wondering if there was a way to apply some sort of shader to fakestones to get the same effect. I think I may experiment with it tomorrow seeing that it will be Sunday and I really shouldn't work but just have fun with TG. Anyone got any ideas? I was wanting more variety than just to apply an image to the rocks because it would be too repetitive. My Christmas wish is to have a fakelichen shader I can apply to the fakestones shader. It would make some really cool rocks.

It's quite simple actually, just add some pf's with the colors you need to the fake stones. For 'plaques' of lichen you'd use a hard edged billow, with a tiny offset, so it raises off the stone and some tiny 'bubbles' on top. Plenty possibilities. Luckily the smallest sizes are no longer restricted to 0.01  :D

These have a lot of potential. Thanks a bunch! I need to be twins at least. So much to do and so little time...
