Title: procedural craters
Post by: russe166 on September 17, 2014, 12:53:40 PM
Hi !

I try to make procedural craters out of Voronoi noise. It is the first render and the craters are not masking each other because it saves 50 percent rendering time in my case.

Second render with twice as many craters but I do not like the result. It does not look like a crater moon to me, so I have to get into the caterfunktion again.

Good start!
looks like raindrops in mud to me, which is not so far from craters after all!
Cheers,
J

I had the same idea...
1st one looks more close than 2nd imho.

It does  :'(

But here is the new render ...

Wow, big improvement...more and more moon looking stuff ;)

Great improvement............now just come up with some subtle impact debris and I think you got it.  :)

Hi!

Thanks for the comments.  I have doubled the number of craters ...

A + B = C

Hi!

No color yet on the landscape but it's getting better ...

Yep. U are on the right lane... ;)

Wow, thats an improvement indeed.
Now add a little bit of "normal" powerfractal landscapeand a flag and I´ll believe you faked the moonlanding!
Cheers,
J

Hi!

Could not get the flag but the Apollo Lunar Module  :)

What do you think is the right amount and height for the craters ?

The final image from the procedural craters. Let's see how they will work together with the real moon data from NASA.

That's looking very good. Curious to see the combi.

Hi!

Here the craters on a moon data .img file. In the left upper corner is only the IMG, next the IMG with colours and finally the IMG with fractal details and procedural craters.

Thats looks really good!

Indeed. It looks a bit like craters aren't really half domes, but have a flattish bottom.

The craters are adjusted to fit the NASA photo from the moon. Some are deeper and some are not. It took me quite some time to figure out what looks best. To get small round craters in a triangle landscape I needed a detail from 2 and Aa 8.

I think it's quite logical for the craters to have all different shapes, as some will be filled with debris from other impacts, other craters will be very deep, being from a faster impact, other a bit angled perhaps. So if working with procedural craters a bit of variation is good.

At first all procedural craters had the same depth but different sizes, and it looked as if the surface was hit by a meteor shower only yesterday and not as if it was of ancient age. So I did the adjustment for the 20 different procedural craters.

Here is a new render from the pole region of the earth moon with the NASA data and the procedural craters with some fractal detail.

So now I need a spacecraft ...
