I guess this is not possible.... but it would open a lot of opportunities, like cones (without blue nodes).
Clouds don't use normals. You have to define a volume with them.
Good thoughts Ulco. Tried your suggestions but couldn't get a working chain. Then, the Plane with Painted shader worked; but, the clouds looked more like Casper the Friendly Ghost. Tried different cloud settings but gave up. Maybe a way of 'resizing' a localized cloud mass would work; i.e., shrinking (or expanding) the overall cloud mass size?
There must be a better way of doing this.
Maybe being able to replicate and localize a steam cloud mass like this.

Yeah...that would be very cool...also for train engine steam and chimney smoke

And you "define a volume" by....? or are you referring to the settings we currently use...sometimes definitions confuse me .
Clouds do not use displacement data at all. They use color info to define a shape (volume). Color intensity controls volume density.

Can a cloud be 'driven' by an object to conform to a shape? Or conversely can an object be given a cloud shader?
Nope and nope. It would be a cool feature, but not currently possible.

I thought so, about the normals. So it's blue nodes after all.
There was a thread sometime back where a number of 3d shapes where created with clouds using blue nodes but I can't find it,

thanks Oshyan...did not know that,,,,
Yes, there are some blue node combi's about. In fact, I probably seen them all and use a few, whether or not adapted.
mhaze - Here you go,it was within this thread.

Blue nodes or for some easy shapes like a cube you could use SSS projections.
On more than one axis, that is.
that's the one, cheers :)
There's a new option coming in Terragen 3.2 which lets you disable the built-in cloud shape profile (tapering top/bottom) to more easily achieve specific shapes with e.g. function nodes.

got me chomping on my bit(s) now
Sounds good Oshyan.
