I already feel that Im stupid for having to ask this. But I swear I cannot make black dirt.
Color does not work in TG like in a painting program. OK I get that. And I get that in reality Black is not a real color but the absence of color. TG's color wheel you cant choose "black". And again as stupid as I may be, the only way I can make black is by layering colors that more or less end up muddy versions of darkish colors that are not really "black". And that may be more real. But then, how would you tell me to go about making black sand, like the kind you find in Hawaii and Iceland, black volcanic sand?
The thing is, that if you hold a handful of "black sand" its not a dark version of some other colors, its black. So... There you go, now you know the sad truth about me. I haven't been able make sand clips I have look like real black sand. Just lower the slider thingy.
You can certainly pick absolute black (0,0,0 RGB) as a color, or even do a negative "color". If you're not even able to get that far, then maybe there's some fundamental piece of info lacking, or a misunderstanding. First of all, have you read the Color Picker docs? http://planetside.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=Colour_Picker
The other thing of course is that everything in your scene, every color, is affected by atmosphere and lighting. So in bright lighting, a very dark surface could look lighter, or in the distance it could look very blue even though it's black (because it has little or no color of its own, so you just see the atmosphere color).
As usual with almost any question, it's helpful to post examples of the problems you're having (and ideally what you want to achieve). I do wish you shared your tests and other images more, because you have a lot of (generally quite good and interesting) questions, but sometimes it takes a while to really get to the heart of what you're aiming for due to lack of visuals. Images are less subjective than description, generally.

Black sand. You know I was just thinking about a nice Iceland beach with white rolling waves and black sand.... but there's no time now.
I didn't totally understand what Ulco was trying to do with the sand TGD (it created basic black sand, but there were two stones shaders with identical settings, one of which seemed to have no effect). So I tweaked it to my liking, including adding some specularity, and making the "black" sand just ever so slightly lighter than true black (you won't often find such dark surfaces in nature).
Hope you don't mind me posting the changes Ulco. Attached is the TGC (clipe file) of a basic "sand" setup, a render from just above ground level (about 0.5 meters), and another render of the sand dropped into Ulco's fantastic Beach scene. Looks rather like I saw when I was in Iceland! I'll be posting a photo of the dark beaches and dunes soon, actually...

Well, I used 2 seconds to drop 2 black fake stones in, just to show Michael that black is not impossible. Didn't bother much more.
And you're ahead of me with the beach, I was thinking of maybe doing something like that (when I find the time), but with the strange standing rock that you see on some photo's. Your render looks great, by the way, Oshyan!
I'd never, having never been to either Iceland or Hawaii, seen black sand....great renders Oshyan....thanks for the black sand .tgc

;D Who has? Oh wait, I know someone >:( Well we have google, so who needs reality.
Thanks for the clips guys. I am sure it will be of use to others as well.
@Oshyan,

Oh man. Just did not even think of it. I should post a gif here to emphasize my feeling of stupid. but Im too sad at the realization that Im an idiot.
The only thing I can do now is lash out in anger at the world... But the world is too big, so I'll just pick on TG... The color dropper in TG3 OSX is broken. BROKEN! :P
;D
Well, it is broken though. Do you know this already or should I file a bug in support?
Uh, it should not be broken. What do you mean?

Ok, so...
Open defualt scene
go to base colors
Click high or low color
select the pain pallet icon
select the color dropper at the bottom of the new picker window (it turns blue when active)
mouse arrow icon does not become color dropper icon.
Click cancel
Color dropper selector now appears.
Does not work.
OSX 10.10.1
I made a screen movie of everything I am doing so you can see clearly how it is broken. It is 9MB zipped. I don't know how to make it smaller so that I can post it? please believe me though, that it is not behaving correctly/at all.
You can email it to support@planetside.co.uk
Thanks!

Ok, I see it. So you're opening the OS X color picker, which has a color dropper function, but *that* function does not work. Has it always been this way, or does it do this after an upgrade (e.g. 10.10)?
- Oshyan
It worked perfectly in TG2. I always used it. Thats why I never thought to use the RGB values. I never had too. I simply "picked" all my colors from a pallet or image... Wich is probably also why I was never able to get a real black. ;D
But I can't tell you which up date broke it precisely. I haven't used it since TG2. Mostly since the updates to 3, I have just been experimenting, and have not worried about color choices. And I can't say if it is Yosemite or not. I only noticed it before starting this thread. I can tell you I updated Yosemite once (after the initial upgrade to Yosemite). I don't recall if that was before or after I noticed the bug.
Glad it is broken though, I would have felt misirable if I was just using it wrong, which is not unheard of for me ;) Sorry I cant be of any real help.
Haha, well I don't personally have a Mac to verify the issue on unfortunately. But the video demonstrates at least that it is happening *for you*. The question is whether it was a TG update or (IMO more likely) an OS update that broke it. I do vaguely recall some color picker changes in one of the previous updates that may have done it though. I'll see if I can track it down...

Hi Michael,
It seems like it might be broken on OS X 10.10. It does work on OS X 10.9. I'll have a look at it when I'm able.
Regards,
Jo
Happy hunting fellas :)
On a side note. Im going to recored my problems from now on rather than write them out. That was way more effective ;D
We would love it if everyone did that! :)

Still broke :'( in most resent TG update.
Hey Oshyan,
how are you?
Amazing render! I tried the black sand.tgd scene, unfortunately it doesn t seem to work. the render i obtain doesn t not look anywhere near yours. I have a question , is it possible that i could have a look to your scene?

My image (of the beach) was created based on the one Dune posted just above my reply. You would just add the TGC (clip file) that I posted into that TGD (scene file) that Ulco created.
