Title: Distance between Cam lens and object?
Post by: archonforest on January 20, 2015, 09:13:30 AM
Possible to measure the distance between the lens and the object somehow? I am struggling again to figure out the focus distance. Even If I turn on the Dof preview it goes bananas sometimes. Like whatever number I set the preview stays on the same place? Like 1 m or 500m and the focus line(coloring) not moving.
Best would be to have an option where I can say "show distance between camera and this object".

If you hover above the scene (object and camera) in the preview you can use the measure tool for just that.

Great idea, never have thought of that. This would apply for the 'Distance shader' as well?

Thx. I tried this idea before and the I got some raw data that was somewhat useful but it was pretty raw.
Nevertheless sometimes when u really zoomed in onto something it would be good to have some proper measure tool that can give the exact measure...

View Menu => 3D Preview location and then roll over your object.  Best method.

Edit:  Oh you mean exact to within the object itself.  It may not be possible.

Yeah could be a right click menu...like distant between..and u choose either 2 object or the cam or an object...etc

Distance between camera and object-what,surface,pivot point or what?
It's not that easy most likely.Let's say you have a helicopter, how would you
make TG know which point of the object is your point of interest?
Even harder than an autofocus feature on a real camera I'd say.
But of course I may be wrong.

I could use the middle of the object for sure as that is at least a precise distant. Like I want to focus on a rock for example. If I know that the middle of the rock is 1m from the lens then I am almost done. Only little adjustment would be needed.

You can read out the coordinates for the pivot point of the object and you
have the camera coordinates where is the problem then?

Sounds like a great idea! Testing it now...
