I've decided to take a stab at an alpine meadow full of wildflowers. The terrain is of Mt. Rainier, near Mazama Ridge, with some erosion and snow added in World Machine. All told there are 16 populations, which made for higher than expected render times, but wasn't really a problem. I want to do some work with the mid-ground trees to give ore variety in variety and color. Thanks for looking.
Looks quite nice already! I like most of the scene, but for some reason the clouds in particular look very good to me. Just very natural, not showy or anything, just realistic. Overall I think exposure could be upped a tad. Nothing is overly dark and perhaps this mood fits the weather best, but it just seems a little dim and dull in light and overall "punch" to me... The varied lighting on the mountain looks great though, I must say. :)

I agree with Oshyan; very nice, but on the dark side.
Pretty nice one!
Excellent work - those clouds are great. I too find it too dark.

It must be dark... right Lord Vader? :D
In the low mountain areas this kind of lighting is common...very like British Columbia CA on a typical overcast day in the mountains. Big Like, and not too dark for me....
I think it's just that if I were standing there as a photographer, I would increase exposure to get a more pleasing effect.

Thank you, all, for the input! The "dark" side must be strong with this one! lol
Well, you *are* Darth Vader, so I'm not really surprised. ;)

heh heh heh
Version 2 has been brought a bit closer to the light side of the force. I upped the exposure, changed the sun's heading, and made the rock surfaces more interesting and detailed. Coming along nicely, it is.
I think that made a pretty big difference really. Put side to side, I really like this new one much more.
Yeeesss, yeeeesssss. The force is strong with this one. :D

It may just be me but the snow seems mighty thick on the slopes compared to the 'full summer' flora you have happening... which looks great btw, just seems at seasonal odds from front to back
Agreed, I like this much more as well.
love the 4 tiers effect......imo wrong type of flower for this (ihave not read recent posts so if anyone has mentioned it i apologise)
something more like something other than tallish?

Some sunbeams shining down onto the flowers would provide more contrast and brighten up the image. But honestly, I would be very pleased with this render had I made it.
The second render looks great!

D'oh
Here is the final version. I'd spend more time on it, but my brain wants to hop from project to project making finishing one difficult. I might have to come back to this one since there is room for improvement, especially in mastering WM's snow function to get a more "summer" feel to it. Thanks for taking a look!
Oh my gosh, this is absolutely beautiful.
Thank you :)
Being unfamiliar with alpine scenarios I stand corrected by Oshyan and and with draw my previous critique, the snow is quite appropriate and this is a lovely image.
This is a gorgeous image.
Certainly a gorgeous end result. I actually prefer the previous smoother snow setup, it seemed to give a better sense of (large, distant) scale, but overall the final is an improvement in almost every respect. Well done!

May I ask what conifers did you use here?

They are nice eh Bob. Wondering myself.
Stunningly realistic!
Thank you, all!
The conifers are a whole mess Xfrog models. I used the Douglas Fir (m), Incense Cedar (m), White Fir (m), Western Red Cedar (m), Eastern Hemlock (a), Incense Cedar (y), and White Fir (y). I could probably get away with using less variety since they're hard to tell apart at a distance.
O K...it's the cedars that caught my eye, I have the Incense Cedar, Western Red Cedar, White Fir, Eastern Hemlock but no Douglas Fir. Only missing the Douglas Fir so I may try this blend as I like it a lot. To my colour blind eye there's nice colour variation...dunno bout for "normally sighted" folk. Thanks for the info.
Ok, I lied about being done with this one. I've changed the FOV and aspect ratio to emphasize the mountain. I also spent time in WM making the snow function do what I wanted. Now instead of a full blanket of snow, I have a closer representation of summer glacial remnants which, I feel, works better with the vibrant vegetation and blooming wildflowers. I still want to work some more with the forest distribution, but overall I think the changes have been an improvement.

Gasp...mind blowing difference. It really shows the beauty if the mountain terrain now.... your little lie is easily forgiven....thanks for sharing.
Beautiful effort; your extra work was worth every minute.
Yes, I like this much better!
Absolutely stunning!
veeeery nice!
Very nice indeed.
Can I be evil and suggest it seems to be missing some elevation data near the horizon on the left? I'm guessing if you extended the terrain to 120km wide you'd see some more distant mountains on the horizon unless it's looking upwards (which it doesn't appear to be) Maybe something to try in the next project ;)
Much much realism in this render. Impressive one !
Thank you everybody!
Ben, you have a sharp eye, an evil one ;) but sharp! The terrain does indeed cut off about 20km behind the mountain. However, the camera is pointing up seven degrees so any terrain would be obscured by the mountain's flank. I had a DEM for the entire state in the file, but it was invisible from this POV so I disabled it.
Well spotted Ben...takes a pro with them DEMs to notice.....
Holy crap, that's beautiful! I may need to print this one and hang on the office wall.
Here's a bigger version with some minor tweaks and population editing. I rendered it at 4608x2048, which is too big to upload to the forums, so if you want a full size version shoot me a PM and I'll email you a copy. I'm done with this one...I think ;)
Just beautiful !!!
Superb!
Splendid. Just letting you know the print is hanging on my office wall right beneath Ulco's medieval Dutch town and Little Dakota Creek from zaxxon. People think it's a photo of course :)
;D
You changed your forum name, but I've seen that name before. Or am I not awake yet?
Ineed I did. I changed it so that it match my deviantart name, you've probably seen it when I linked to images there.
Independent of the name - absolutely beautiful!
excellent
That is one beautiful render. ;)
8) 8) 8)
Super cool, really superb!
Well done, my wife says quizzically "is that Terragen??"
That, I can assure you is a complement of the highest order!
:)
Cheers
