I had some time to get working again with terragen in the last 3 days and this is what i did. Again as always feedback an suggestions are welcome .
I find this very pleasing, nice work.
This has a nice feel, the road and trees are good but I'd like to see a bigger image. It looks like the ground veg could be denser! The white line looks too wide.
Agreed; darken in the sky, narrow white line (max 10cm) and bigger render are the most important issues. But it's certainly has potential indeed.
Yeah great start here! ;)
Agree with all suggestions. Big potential here.
Welcome back and a good start. Agree with Dune on all points.
Thanks for the feedback, I will redo this render so it can be bigger. I will also add more detail to the road and add more grass for the clouds I shall try something else. I just dont have the comp I had at home, so renders to take time....alot of time.
Hey guys its impossible for me to render at a better quality as i am on a laptop at the moment.... I was wondering what computer I should buy so that i could get good renders on terragen I am looking at 8cores form Intel with 12 to 32gb of ram does anyone have some advice on this matter, thanks.
I should also mention that i wont buy a 4000$ computer so anything between 1000-2200$
For 1000-2200 bucks u can get a very good PC for TG. Especially in the U.S.
Take a look here for example to what u can get for the budget u have:
http://www.digitalstorm.com/gaming-desktops.asp
Hope it helps.
Damn, I just love to answer hardware related question :D :D Especially if this will help a fellow TGist!

My home pc cost £1200, which includes parts if I had to buy, like case and PSU. It has an Intel i7 5820 6 core chip over clocked at 4.2 ghz with 16gb of low cost ram (which I will expand at some stage, but not really needed for most work). So 12 buckets at render time. The graphics card is one of the cheap 970 series. Got one of the Corsair self contained water coolers and some ultra silent fans. I can't hear the thing at all. It will ramp up under load, but really pleased with the set up for the price.
TG renders look even better with more resolution and AA, so having something that can handle population previews and crop renders quickly really make the whole thing a more enjoyable and productive experience.
Thanks for the quick replies. For the website you sent me i did take a look it looks interesting but prices for 8gb of ram looks abit expensive as i need min 16gb ...also i am in Canada. .. and i really like the idea of something over 4 cores but your build at 1200 £ is abit out of price for me as it is more like 2500$ in can money. I wished id have a 6 to 8 core intel with 16gb of ram ddr4 and a medium graphics card but i dont think its possible at 2000$
Michael you can also look for refurbished workstations. I got one from the UK with a dual quad xeon set up for about 600 bucks. It is a monster. With Intels HT technology TG uses 16 cores and I am very pleased with the speed.
Otherwise I still think that u can get something decent with your budget.
Good luck for your search for a fast PC
The road is worth it.
Hey Archonforest how can I get this type of monster? It would be great. I am also looking at Acer at the moment and Asus but dam are they pricy for what they offer ... At the moment my laptop takes about 6 to 8 hrs to render one frame at 0.8 detail and 10 AA....
I can give u the address of the company I got it but not sure if they deliver to every country. Take a look here:http://www.bargainhardware.co.uk/
Otherwise just type in your browser "refurbished workstations" or similar and search. I am sure u will find something. Wish u luck ;)
Hey guys, So i did look at the website but at the moment nothing I saw would make me want to spend. I will keep on checking this website very week. I also saw this deal .. Was wondering what you guys think about it. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883230006&_ga=1.135872822.606033478.1435026441
From what I know now, that looks good. But win 8? Isn't win 7 still better? And wouldn't you prefer having it assembled from chosen stuff rather than such complete (installed and all) set. They also install lots of rubbish with it.
If you live in the uk try pc specialist.

Not bad but I would still suggest to you to see a refurbished one. I mean if u got one around you as prices are way lower and a real workstation quality PC is better than a gaming stuff IMHO.
I am working on DELL workstations since years and they are running almost day and night without any problem for example.

Incidentally my refurbished tower is a DELL and I've never had such a quiet computer...didn't think it was on at first...just put my HDD, Vid Card and RAM into it and I'm off to the races.
Thanks again to everyone who wrote I am still on the lookout for that PC but i shall take my time. I also started something new with my laptop, it is an animation keep in mind my comp isn't good to render. I just wanted to see what was the most details it could render without taking ages to render . I have a 8sec video still working on the last 5secs or so i should post a link on here in this section later on today...
Link :
please keep in mind it is only a start.
very cool, be nice when you finalize it for sure.
Yes, go on... surely that film will be great!
Nice start :)
Nice start. Too bad about the ad filling almost half the frame, but you can't help it.
There is a small ''X'' icone you can press to close the add I think top right of the add . But sorry about the adds didnt mean to have them on this vid.

But y gotta go full screen to get to the X....
Very good question, I dont know . For me it seems to work well with the player that is on this page.
I have a new version coming soon maybe sometime like this weekend and I will make sure it has no problems with it or well, I will try too.
Very nice! No ads for me. Possibly due to Adblock. Won't browse without it.
Thank you Otakar. Here is the next part of the vid ... I added about 70 frames to it.
I now wish to make this video have 2 times more details but my computer is not up for this extreme task... oh btw you can now play the vid at 1080 ...

Have you looked into Pixel Plow, the rendering service for really large images and animation? The link is somewhere in the forum.
Pixel Plow is the most affordable Terragen render farm. Pricing here: http://www.pixelplow.net/pricing/

If you're interested in my opinion; I think you should take care that the camera doesn't fly through branches and leaves, perhaps better to have a lower altitude and fly/walk along the road. I also think it is very dark! That's a pity, as the scene is worth some better lighting. More GI perhaps.
If the terrain is 'kind of the same' along the road, you might also choose to make a slower cam movement and just look around, very subtle. Perhaps so that the light will give the variation in the animation; first from very low into the sun, then turning, rising and seeing more of the veggies, for instance. Very subtle. Like what Oshyan did with my Ponte Salario in the first few shots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SS1SiJgW77E (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SS1SiJgW77E)

all really good advice....
Dune, I shall take your advice for sure, thanks for taking time to post . Soo... I will make one render of an update of the new video I wish to make one day .. So that you guys could tell me if its worth a video render or not. For the render Farms I did try it once.... was ok. But ended up paying 12$ for nothing as the vid I was doing was not even at 11% and I dont want to pay 100$, so because of that I don't want to try it again.
Oh btw I am still looking for comps .. Also thank you Oshyan & bobbystahr for your replys and to all of the others that did reply over here.
Here is one frame I did render with new specs, more light, changed the light color change the hight of the camera.. added more grass and added some different grass, I also added rocks and abit more details to the clouds .
nice...
Looks nice.
Nice one! ;)
I was bored so I decided to make a concept of League of Legends on Terragen 3...
:)
cool
The latest render looks great! If you render another animation, just be sure to use GI Caching. :)

quite awesome. Both the last two!
Thanks for the comments I started a new scene but I will come back to this one sometime this month I hope. I wanted to see what i could do with darker colors. ..
I just have a quick question about water . How can I make the water follow a certain path .. I did try with painting on the ground and then telling terragen to only show water in that area like I would do for vegetation but it doesnt seem to work... ? oh an is it possible to have a paint brush that is square and not a circle ..

Try adding the water thru a Surface layer maybe..I did pot holes after a rain and I used a lake marginally below most of the ground surface and that worked well for me. Also a reflective shader right on the road surface modulated with fractal break up will give the impression of wetness...there y go 3 things t try.
An no, not as yet..re: square brush

Wow Michelh, that's great! Gives me some ideas on what to improve on with my scene. Thanks.
You need 'real' water or just the reflection on ground? A water shader on ground won't work, as the planet is 'kind of solid'. If you want a 'real' puddle or stream, you'd have to use a masking method to displace the area down, and then add the terrain without the downward displacement to a local plane, or sphere (disable shadows) at height=0, and add a water shader there.
With a color adjust you can make all sorts of hard or soft variations of a (painted) mask.
If you want just the glistening and reflection of water, add a reflective shader to the masked surface layer in the terrain shader's line (below the rest of course). In that surface shader turn color off, and add a color adjust set at gamma 0.7 or so, to darken the wet area, then the reflective shader as child.
Thank you bobbystahr and Dune for taking time to answer my question and yes dune it is real water i wish to do. Abit like this picture i posted here . Stranded I am glad i gaved you ideas for a new project, could you show it to me once you have a render done.?
1= Canal made with real water ( water follows a clear path )
2= Having roads that are also maybe driven form the same principle as for the Canal.
I basicaly wish to control where the water will go .

Dune has a road set up that has road and verges in it. The road could be lowered and the verges converted to roads following the canal(lowered road). I think it's in File Sharing . This isn't the thread I was thinking of but does a good job illustrating the concept
DL the tgd posted within the thread

Thanks, this looks like fun stuff to learn. At the moment I can only do roads that are staright as i dont understand how to make the texture able to follow a road that is way more curvy.
Oh also very stupid question but do you think i could get the same render or even better with less time if i just lest say lower my detail render from 2 to somthing like 0.7 and make the AA go form 6 to maybe 12 or higher.? just wondering if AA could replace the detail level up to a certain point while making render time less long as I am still on my old laptop quad core 6gb of ram ... No i still didn't buy a new computer .. still looking for ''the good deal'' .
Having the textures following the roads or rivers is easy; just use the same warping PF; take the textures through an extra warp node that uses the same vector displacement and PF.
And detail 2 is extremely high, takes ages to render. 0.5 is decent, 0.8 is already really good. I never use higher than that. Roughly said; detail works on the terrain, AA works on objects, and there AA 6 is already pretty good, IMO.
Is there any way I could get a picture of that? because I get lost as soon as you say Warping PF ..
Sure. For the three simple shapes you can use any mask or combination. They will all three be warped the same, except 2, which is warped extra.
