Title: render node clarifications
Post by: ewong on August 12, 2015, 03:32:06 AM
Hi,

I'm looking at setting up a render node and I was wondering if someone can clarify something.

I downloaded the Terragen Linux render node, but I'm kinda stuck.

1) Does the Terragen Linux render node package work on a 32bit Linux node?

2) I need to have X running?  The docs doesn't say and running "./terragen" gives me
"bash: ./terragen: cannot execute binary file"

3) I clicked on download and downloaded it once.  I then clicked on it two more times as I had lost
track of where I had downloaded it.  When I found out the path, I clicked cancel.  Unfortunately,
the system counted that cancelled download as 1.  (so that's 2 cancelled download).

4) My understanding of a render farm was that some polller check for some source and if it has changed,
it'd download the source and render it and put the output in some accessible location.  Am I wrong?
(something like what buildbot does for building software)

Thanks

Ed

I believe the render node is 64-bit only. I don't know the answer to #2, the instructions should include all you need I think. If you need your download #s reset, let us know and we can do that. There is no built-in render or asset manager, so your point 4 doesn't apply in Terragen; you must make sure all assets needed for your render are available locally to the render node.

Would it be good if the render node on the download page said 64 bit as a comment - there could also be comment saying it was for professional+ installations only?
I say it was there, thought I was entitled to it downloaded, it didn't work found this thread copied it to a 64 bit m/c and then found I needed the professional version!

You're right, the availability of the Linux render node download for Creative version users was a mistake. I have corrected it and that will hopefully prevent any future confusion. Sorry about that.

Hi,

maybe it is a bit late for you Ed, but for those who still wonder regarding the first two points...

1) Oshyans assumption is correct, the render node does not work on a 32 bit linux. If you try it gives you the following or similar output:  "bash: ./terragen: cannot execute binary file: Exec format error"

I guess this was the problem on Ed's machine.

2) You do not need to have X running.  I stopped the dm and was still able to render.

Sorry for the delay.. (albeit a year too late..).  (completely forgot about this post.)

Thanks for the clarifications.
