Title: Freelancer forum?
Post by: ZB on August 23, 2015, 11:16:04 AM
Can anyone please recommend a forum for contacting Terragen artists for noncommercial work? I have need of a skybox (literally-- no ground, just clouds) for an old PC game that I've been working on a graphics upgrade mod for.

Thanks in advance.

Why not just private message anyone here? I am certain anyone here has no problem with non-commercial work offers. Speaking of skyboxes, i have done spherical panoramas on a few occasions myself.

This right here is the best way to request such a thing, so you've done it. :)

Well, if it's not against forum etiquette, alrighty then...

The game is System Shock 2. I need a skybox for the first level, set on Earth:

This is the original skybox that shipped with the game:

Yeahhh... nowhere to go but up with this thing.

The horizon is never visible in the level where this is used, so no ground texture is needed. The level lighting colors and angle seem to represent dusk, so this is what I've been using so far:

This works well, but is way too low-quality for modern eyes-- 256x256 panels at 8-bit color depth. So I need something like this, but higher-res. Doesn't need to be identical, just close. An orangey, cloudy dusk.

Format must be standard 6-panel skybox, 24-bit PNG, 1024x1024 per panel if possible. It's my understanding that 900x900 is the max for the free version of TG. Given the subject matter, that should be okay (the engine requires power-of-two textures, so I'd just have to scale it up a bit).

Hopefully something like this wouldn't be too much work?

Yes, the original looks very bad. Room for improvement.
