I was working on this - then Daniil's erosion shader appeared :D It has made an amazing difference to the image.  Now to go away and play....

Beautiful scene. I love the juxtaposition of the wild-looking sky and the jagged, slanted terrain. They seem to echo each other's shapes, but in opposition.
