Title: Smooth Columns
Post by: WAS on December 30, 2015, 12:59:18 AM
How would one go about creating smooth columns? I tried using a PF to create circular spots but unfortunately offsets create very jagged straight columns with the colour contrast up to create straight edges. With the colour contrast turned down, it's hard to get level columns at relatively the same height.

I also am having issues with using the surface layer to create bulges before adding surface detail where it looks like the tops are just cut off (only at certain distance) straight (even with a PF that should be adding variance to the top)

Another issue is where altitude softness creates jaggedness as seen with straight edges. Any way to smooth this as well?

For the cutoffs, increase diplacement tolerance in the planet node (a little at the time).

Smooth?  How do you create jagged columns?

Smooth?  How do you create jagged columns?

By default straight edges are a mess of angles if not a object it seems. Of example, take a SSS with no edge profile and displace.

That's where all the extra noise is from. The displacement isn't that aggressive in the least if you look.

The jagged straight edges can be resolved by using a surface layer with something other then directly straight (altitude softness), with no fractal breakup.

PF is a good way to get a spire-distribution. Efflux and me used Perlin noise functions, but we knew little about the PFs those days ;-)
