Title: Somerset LIDAR "Flood"
Post by: cyphyr on March 04, 2016, 06:22:41 AM
I thought I'd post a view over my home town showing the effects of a possible sea level rise.
The data is from publicly released LIDAR scans and is available through the UK Environment Agency (link (http://environment.data.gov.uk/ds/survey/#/survey)) in 1m resolution and 2m resolution.

Very cool. So the image also contains a satelite image, no procedural or mapping textures? And trees, are they objects or satelite imagery?
I gather that's the wellknown archeaological site, the large hill?

Glastonbury, the ancient Isle of Avalon, resting place of King Arthur and all that. Had the largest Abbey in the UK till Henry XIII (King with the 6 wives) broke with Rome and seized all it's assets.

The LIDAR data comes in two formats, LIDAR Composite Digital Terrain Model (DTM), and, LIDAR Composite Digital Surface Model (DSM). The difference being that the Surface model maps the buildings and trees, hedges etc whilst the Terrain model somehow "sees" through these surface details and only maps the terrain. I have used the Surface scans in the above images.
The Colour texture is from ESRI ArcGIS compiled via a nifty bit of software called Terraincognita  (http://sourceforge.net/projects/terraincognita2)that stitches together massive amounts of Aerial and satellite data.
The two datasets are then overlayed in GeoMapper and exported as GeoTiffs. Terragen could place them in the correct place on the planet but I prefer to work at the "North Poll" where possible.

Thanks for explaining, Richard. Nice workflow. I wish they this kind of stuff of the Netherlands.

would be very handy with the work you've been getting.

Wow. 1 meter rise makes a heck of a lot of difference...scary stuff.

I've not looked at the data set but these appear to be pretty much the same kind of data

Hmm, had a quick look. Data looks to be very incomplete and varied ...

This looks more promising ...

Thanks Richard. I know AHN, but I've never found a way to get detailed greyscale heightmaps out of it. I know people who can supply them, but I don't want to ask all the time  ;)
On the other hand, I don't really need it (much).

That looks really cool! How close can you put your camera without losing too much details?
