Is one of those effects working yet????
If no how to achieve this...http://www.planetside.co.uk/gallery/v/tg2gallery/file_1392406.jpg.html (http://www.planetside.co.uk/gallery/v/tg2gallery/file_1392406.jpg.html)
That image is done simply with judicious use of textures - no SSS there. The features you asked for will, however, be available in the final release.
How about this one, since someones opened the thread on translucency... http://www.planetside.co.uk/gallery/v/tg2gallery/translucency_test_01.jpg.html
???
That was done with a basic, unoptimized, inefficient, and incredibly time-consuming method that simply blows render times out of the water (at about escape velocity). From what I understand the SSS that will be implemented in the future will be much more efficient. You'll have to wait for a reply from Planetside for more details.
Thanks old_blaggard...so back to the experimentation
We do hope to include an optimized subsurface scattering shader in the final version but it probably wouldn't be available until the final release. It would be most appropriate for thicker translucent materials - the current translucency fake in the Default Shader works well for planar or very thin objects like leaves.

Well it took some serious tweaking, but I have a slight workaround for SSS, though truly implemented SSS is going to be the ultimate call.
Here is an example (though still more work to do).
If done right, it can be used well for snow, and I am working on icebergs at the moment. Even if its not "true" SSS, if the effect is convincing, its acceptable enough for me (for now) ;D
Once I dial it in, I'll post the clips.
Ooh, it's looking very nice.
Nice, moodflow.
Excellent moodflow. I'm working on it, too... it is rendering now. so as soon as I have it I'll post, but it has a lot of artifacts so It isn't so nice as yours. I'll wait your clips. ;)
Hey, hey! Very interesting results. Good work!!!
Here is the clip file. Be sure to connect your nodes to the input above the ^ symbol.
Still a bit more work to do, but I won't have time for a while. So have at it with any tweaks you'd like to add or change.
How do you use .tgc's? I couldn't get TG2TP to recognize them. When I changed the extension to .tgd it loaded but nothing else worked.
Most troubling. Perhaps this is a problem with my version. I downloaded the latest build available, and I'm on a macintosh.
.tgc files are "node clips" that can be inserted into your project, using the "Insert clip file" item in the File menu. After you have done that you may need to move around a little in the network view to see where the nodes have been created.

I thought I might just add that in the next release the Mac version does give .tgc files proper icons, however you can't open them by double clicking on them at this point. Double clicking should start TG2 if it isn't already running, but the file won't be loaded. This will probably be addressed at some point, but possibly isn't as straightforward to implement as loading .tgd files. Like Matt says, the way to do it is to use the "Insert clip file" item in the File menu.

Jo
Hot damn! It works!
Thanks, mates.
Hi, that´s my best try yet of making an iceberg.

I am really looking forward to try it with translucency, fake or not. :)
Just have to wait for another render to finish.
Thanks,
Jan
Ooh, this looks quite good.
I love your second picture, Moodflow. Ice and snow never looks convincing in most GC landscape renders but that picture does. Probably the best I've seen.
