Title: Cloud fractal on water shader
Post by: luvsmuzik on June 08, 2016, 10:56:10 AM
I got this far, then I saw the latest animation. WOW!

I will keep plugging in this node and that node....looking for translucency, but at least there is foam, sort of, lol.

Update....got the little fractal....now to find the big one!

I am having way too much fun with this!

This is what I am trying to do......

These two images have cloud fractals on a water shader. The coverage is adjusted with a new surface layer. Color are exaggerated here to show various shaders applied.

If it doesn't work for foam, I shall do icebergs with it, lol

Why are you using cloud fractals?

Why are you using cloud fractals?

I am just experimenting. I think I saw this in a tutorial that I can't find now.

As of yet I cannot get an EXR image map used as displacement to turn white for the foam when applied to lake water shader. I saw another example of an EXR used for displacement so I took one of my images from animation and tried it.

I really do try to follow the tutorial steps but I do not have (or can't find) a "White peaks" Shader. I was used to using foam in the old version water works plugin.

I don't know what tutorial you are following, but getting the peaks to become white isn't hard. If you use the displacement of a fractal (preferably with stretched Y) you can add a (blue node) displacement to scaler node, and add a color adjust after that to balance the amount and softness of white on the peaks. If you are using the colors of a fractal to feed into a displacement shader for the waves, you can feed the same colors through a color adjust for the foam on the tops in an added surface layer. But there are more ways, like using the displacement intersection, favor rises, or even the altitude range settings in a surface shader.

@Dune

I am trying to follow this tutorial by WASasquatch. Perhaps that is just a PF renamed Whitepeaks? As you can tell, I do not have all the brains you all do.

Thank you for your response to my question! Lots to try there too!

I guess so, as there is no node called whitepeaks. It's good habit to name all nodes, so you easily recognize their purpose.

Disconnected the cloud fractal, still want some sparsity in thickness of foam whiteness. I have tried opacity, translucency....I will  see what else doesn't work next, lol

I have now switched to a coastal foam clip file and whole new terrain. This image was rendered with DOF. It is definitely a WIP but like where it is going.

Fake stoneshader crabgrass, my rock, and trees.
Thankyou for the tgo crabgrass, I cannot read the notepad for author, artist.

connected the displacement to FSS. Doh!

The crab grass is by AP, FYI...there is no readme in the zip I have, but the freestuff was uploaded by AP.
