Title: The Lost Island of Atlantis
Post by: mantix99 on July 02, 2016, 03:40:47 PM
Hello Terragen community,

I'm leading a team of academic researchers who are studying an exciting new theory on the actual historical location of Atlantis.  The team consists of myself and four professors:  an archaeologist, an ancient greek historian, a geologist/volcanologist, and a paleobotanist.  Using clues from Plato's texts and the latest satellite altimetry and sonar imaging, we've identified a submerged landmass that perfectly matches Plato's ancient descriptions-- along with supporting scientific evidence from core sample analysis.  We also have sonar images of a site on the landmass that appears to be the half-buried capital city-- including views of two large objects that correspond to the legendary Royal Palace and Temple of Poseidon.

We are looking for a creative Terragen artist who can take our 3D bathymetry dataset and "raise" it back above the water-- add grass, trees, waterways, sky, and clouds, to recreate what the island would have looked like before it sank.

This is a very special project, but the work must be done for free and you must be willing to sign an NDA (nondisclosure agreement).  If we can confirm the discovery with an expedition and the project turns into a documentary movie, you will be given full credit as the artist who brought Atlantis back to life.

If anyone is interested, please send a sample of your work to:  jason_rubin@hotmail.com.

Best regards,

Jason Rubin, MD

Very cool, I had been wondering if there was DEM info available for that spot . I may reply but my time is being consumed by playing music gigs for the next short while. Good luck if I don't e mail you. Great project!

Sounds like a very intriguing venture, and I'm sure someone will pop up and respond. Good luck!

I wish you good luck, and I'd love to catch the results.

I'm not usually a voice on these forums so I hope I'm forgiven for stepping into this, but I feel compelled to make a humble suggestion: browsing through the works on the forum, it's pretty clear there are a number of individuals that can produce some impressive results, and I wager those individuals would love to take you up on the offer - but I think you should at least sweeten the deal. I get you have a (or no) budget, but I highly recommend offering something ...enough money to get the new Terragen 4, for instance. It's not all that much, but a good reason to go to work for you (mind you my own skill level is definitely NOT what you're looking for).

I don't want to be a [your favorite adjective], but I don't think you should ask someone of skill to provide something for free - at the very least a barter: I've done much work for a bottle of wine or six pack of beer. Not that that is appropriate in a less than personal exchange, but I hope the basic idea is clear. Free means your work is useful but of no value. A few bucks means your work is of value, and this is what I can offer for your time.

Just my POV.

I agree, my main reason not to embark.

Well you are a pro, I think he's looking for hobbyists who have time and **don't need money**....wonder where they are.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions.  I'm open to ideas that would get this project off the ground, including bartering for Terragen 4.

A very interesting project indeed !
Would love to see the final results and what actually will emerge from your scientific research...

I would say that hobbyists (maybe even pros) don't know how to use Bathymetry datasets.

Not too complicated.  Bathymetry is the same thing as topography-- just underwater.  You have XYZ coordinates, and the Z is a negative number because it represents the depth under the ocean's surface.
