Title: The Ambush
Post by: Dune on September 19, 2016, 02:11:36 AM
Well, the guy doing the ambush is (still) very invisible. But he should be, as these Romans are fairly strict in their no-passing (or no-attacking) policy. Just a test to see what my new ferns do, but turned out rather nicely.

Oh, cool! The start of another WIP? Or is it part of something bigger?

Great so far if there wasn't the problem with DOF and some leaves. What if you change the fern by other plants or bushes?

This is a great historical reconstruction scene already !

@Nils; I can't replace the ferns as this was a fern test to begin with! I don't really see a problem here with the DOF and ferns, where do you mean?

The real problem only started this morning when I made a 3D fiddlehead to replace the projection. Can't get the light right. A lot of fiddling ( :P) in ST, but I didn't find what's wrong yet. Preview looks quite okay, but rendered it's completely different. Strange  >:(

Nice scene Ulco.

I don't know what Nils means but maybe this.

The DOF-blur looks more like it lowers the color count then really blurring the ferns.

Ah, that. I think that's because of the displacement. I've repaired the ferns anyway. Quite a job, as the objects I imported in ST came out broken (too small geometry), so I made them 10x as big. That was okay, but the I noticed that there were no normals  >:( So I imported the leaves in Lightwave, added the good fiddleheads, saved as lwo, imported in Poseray, exported as obj, imported in TG and saved as tgo. Pffff. They look good now, but I have to re-render the image, see what comes out.

Can displacement do this? The DOF with the ferns do look mostly strange all over actually.
Not only that part. DOF was kinda problematic in some cases i think Ulco.

DoF and GISD do not currently play nice together.  Just something to keep in mind...

Yeah, you're right. It's not bump, but GISD and DOF. Keep forgetting this. I'm doing another now with decreased GISD and more 'rot' on the leaves, so it isn't so conspicuous.

Kadri pointet out exactly my thoughts. Maybe I was too inaccurate, sorry.

But in your last post anyway you showed the solution. I forgot the DOF GISD problem as well. Good to remember.

Reducing GISD to zero was the only thing that helped. Too bad really. I hope this can be fixed in future.

Yes, it's a pity that GISD does have some issues with DOF.

Maybe I'm already in fall/winter-mood but I really like the latest version much more with its soft shadows and the slightly foggy atmosphere.

Nevertheless I hope that the DOF GISD problem will be solved some day.

As a matter of fact, this was a screendump, just before GISD was implemented  ;) I found the other one a had a little more 'depth', but I like this soft one too.
