Title: Some new user problems (add noise and obj shader)
Post by: mosssi on November 01, 2016, 11:58:13 AM
Hi guys
I'm really new in Terragen and I love it already. But I have some questions which if it's possible please guide me on some of them. Thanks.

First I built a Fractal Terrain node with a painted shader mask and its too smooth in render (The snowy mountain) so I think I can add some noise without changing the overall look of the mountain itself. But changing the smallest scale parameter doesn't affect anything. Any suggestion on adding some noise here?

Second I used Speedtree and exported a tree as obj with mtl and textures. And I should say it's awsome that Terragen can use them automatically and shade the trees. But how could I change the shading of them? I didn't see any parameter for that. Should I shade them in a third application such as Maya and export them again? What's the NormalMap setting from speedtree? Should I invert green channel?

Thanks alot

Welcome to the forum, mosssi. It sure is software to get addicted too.

You can add more fractal noise to the terrain by adding another fractal shader node, setting some values for the size and displacement and mask it by the same painted shader. That should give you more roughness.

And good that you have ST. If you export as obj it should import in TG quite nicely. Even the opacity mask (usually some alpha channel) will load, otherwise check inside the tree  object node and you can make changes there. But how do you exactly mean changing the shading? Make them darker?

Thank you Dune for your reply and now I think this is a good forum too.
I understand what you mean about adding another shader over the first one and yes it makes sense.
And about tree shaders I found them inside the population node (too deep by the way) and yes in some levels I want to change something like specular which is ok right now but how about shader algorithm? I don't know much about this default shader, are they physical shaders or simple blinn materials? is there any extra information about them?

This really is a good forum, quite some people around who know TG and can help users out.

Did you find this: http://planetside.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page (http://planetside.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page) Has a lot of background information, as well as tutorials.
This: http://planetside.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=Default_Shader (http://planetside.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=Default_Shader) tells you all about the default shader.

Hi Dune
Thanks again. Yes I saw some of the doc pages and honestly I need to read more.
Also I saw your website and I should say it's amazing. Nice work.

Welcome mosssi! It's a very nice forum indeed, and lots of extremely talented people around.. I'm always in awe.
And there's not that many of us, so it's kinda cozy in that way... though I hope more and more people get TG4 - so that the devs get more money. :)

Hi Shigawire, thank you. Yes, I feel the same about TG and after a while I hope I can be useful somehow.
