I have been reading and watching and experimenting. I have Blender, so therefore can import 3ds, lwo, collada and a couple other object types.
I have a couple of paint programs capable of saving to alpha.
I tried to use the method Masonspappy described in Blender with duplicating the leaf mesh and then random select more or less from the duplicated mesh and apply a new snow texture. (I will find a way to get just the outer branches, I will, I will, ha!) This went pretty good, but I wanted to make the snow clumpy, so I added a solidify modifier to it and thickened it just a bit. I am now trying to see if I can apply the snow texture mask to the new snow here in TG. My questions are many, but mostly what file type does TG prefer and does it always need the opacity mask?
Below are my color and opacity images, originally 512x512, shown here just as examples. I would of course use a white image for the snow, it is just not shown here.
You cannot extrapolate the single leaf mesh from Blender original tree maker as far as I can tell or I would try that too.
Where I live, not every tree is perfect. We have had storm after storm and yet they still grow.
This tree is purposely twisted and split, but resembles many in my area.
PF and transform input, set to world position applied.
Finally figured out how to displace ground zero SSS....duh. I cannot believe I never noticed that was not checked by default.
Last one is looking especially good. Like something I'd see around here. :)
Agree with Fleetwood, these are looking good. I'm glad you were able to experiment with blender and get some decent results. I know it's a painstaking process but I think the results are worth it. Blender is a free app and incredibly powerful, and seems to work very well with Terragen.

Thanks fleetwood and Masonspappy.
I was thinking of Hanne's incredible forest walk (chase) animation as I made this tree, sliding the twist value back and forth....brainstorm....I should make an animation out of this....if I only knew how, hahahahaha. Someday....
very good looking the last my friend, have a nice weekend! ;D
Thank you Dragonfire!
I know what this scene needs...some junk on the ground...working on it. Experimenting with effects of power fractals on tree bark and rocks now.
TGO Wheat Thank you for sharing!
