Title: A snow scape
Post by: AndyWelder on December 07, 2016, 10:20:28 AM
This render is a kind of co-production by Bobby Stahr and me. The project is done by me in TG3, the rendering is done on Bobby's new 8 core renderbeast with TG4 installed. Once again: Thank you, thank you, Bobby! It took almost 50 hours to render, figure on my old 4 core it would have taken at least three times as long. (Is that decent English, btw? Somehow it does sound odd... :-\) Main reason for the long render time is the use of a reflective shader in combination with the snow layer.
Original render size: 3000x1500, rendered with the use of a .GIC, render settings: Detail 0.9, AA 7, GI cache 8, GI sample 8, Supersample prepass on.

Well, it certainly was worth the wait; it's a great render. Wonderful rocks, great light, really nice. But are you sure all that time was just because of the reflection? You didn't use RT refelction I hope?

Just checked as I didn't look before and yes to RT reflections with no Reflection softness

The snow wouldn't have needed it, and due to displacement would have taken a long time extra.

I might have used luminosity in the Surface shader with a light blue tint for the snow...was my thinking as I watched it render.

Didn't notice the RT option until now   ::)
Using a blueish luminosity... I was aiming more for the orange sunlight being reflected in the snow. In retrospect the reflectivity might have been slightly more visible because now it's not as present as in the lower quality renders.
BTW, thank you for the praising comment, Dune!

I have also, to my dismay at render times, missed that as well...understood re: orange glow. I think I may have tried to fake that with a PF myself.

Indeed am quite pleased with my box's performance. I did nothing else while rendering so that's full utilization of all 8 cores on TG

I like the transition of colors in this! Wonderful snow effect and rock formations.
