Title: Prairie V2
Post by: Antoine on February 04, 2017, 04:26:23 AM
Hello,

I have been inspired by a tv series environment to do this scene. I did the old trees on the left and the cut ones with Tree Plant Factory version 1 (2014).

David.

Oh this is really really nice :)
Great grasses! If possible I'd like to see one or two more variations of the dry and green grasses.
Perhaps they are already there and mixed 100%, if so then you may consider a wee bit more clumping of the variations.
The logs are a nice touch and the trees look good. Not too fond of the tree stump on the right though, the superflat top is a bit distracting?

Which series btw? Carnivale?

Great render, David. I really like the curving track, the bleached grass, and the very nice trees. I agree with Martin about the straight-topped trunk. If you could 'wilden that up' a bit, it's perfect.

Thank you Martin and Ulco !
I have been inspired in part by the "Little house on the prairie" series environment and some summer "causses" landscape environment (high plateaux south of massif central in France). I agree with the straight topped trunk, I need to improve the top.
Otherwise for the grass, yes I will try to add some variations but I don't know if my computer have enough memory for that.

David.

Looks great. A very nice summer feeling. Agree with the others about the grass and the trunk. A tip: there's a free (lying) wood log here:
https://megascans.se/assets/qdtdP
If you rotate it and put it upright a bit into the earth you'll have a very natural looking tree stump with a perfectly imperfect cut area.

Excellent. Like this one a lot.  :)

That's very well done. The grasses and the trees with foliage are natural and individual looking, the stumps could use some work to match the quality of the other objects. The composition and lighting is excellent!

Great image! There is everything to like.  Agree with others about improving on straight cut trunk a tad, but overall this image is well done.

Thank you all !
Here is an updated render with a new trunk. I will try to add some more grass variations on the path if my computer can handle it because there are already many instances in this scene.

When you said tv series, I immediately thought Little House on the Prairie, so well done. It was filmed in the hills above Simi Valley, California  (lived there for awhile) if you wanted to see some photos. On the stump you could put a little birdhouse in the shape of the Ingalls house on the stump as an homage :)

This is really quite nice! It has a very natural feel (as do many of your renders), especially in the lighting and texture colors. Very believable. My only (minor) concern is the log laying down, more in the foreground (the other is hidden enough to not matter as much). I find this log to be a bit overly smooth and not reacting enough to the light direction. If you haven't applied a bump map to it yet, consider adding that, or better yet another Megascans or other high resolution model. If a bump is already applied, consider setting that one object to Force Displacement (you'll probably need to increase Micropoly detail then, though).

Much better log. Regarding
Quotealready many instances in this scene
; you could limit the grass to the front area and about halfway make it procedural color/displacement, taking care to give it a nice smooth transition (distance shader).

Thank you for your advices !
Here is the version 2 : I have changed the foregroung log (made also in TPF 2014) and added more grass variations.
I hope it looks better now.

Lots of little details and really coming along nicely.

Agree w/Richard pretty much with one niggly crit, and maybe only I see this, but on the right side there is a tree in the mix that is perfectly perpendicular and and it always jars me....draws my eye immediately. A slight tilt left or right would destroy this illusion and for me make this a perfect image.

Looking really great. Agree with Bobby, that vertical tree trunk in back grabs attention as it accidentally rises exactly in line with the cut tree.

Ah yes, the log looks much better now. I also like the grass variation and distribution. :)

Well done. Just about everything looks very real. The best part, though, is the composition, very good.
