Title: How to Pretty much cripple (really slow down) a render
Post by: cyphyr on September 21, 2007, 09:47:07 AM
Ok so I'm rendering this scene at the moment, kind of a Swiss chocolate box scene, mountains, lots of trees, lake and (this is the killer) wouldn't it be nice to have a real thin layer of mist lying over the lake. So now the render has to calculate the mountains and trees reflecting through the mist onto the lake and back again. A render that used to take a few hours (pre mist) is now up to 26 hours and only a third of the way through. Considering that my foreground is all well above the mist/lake layer would it be faster to stop the render once these have been covered and re-render the foreground with the mist/lake disabled or will their influence be not be impacting on the foreground part of the render time since they are not visible?

or you can do a crop render where the mist is and then disable the mist and do a full render.....then stitch them in photoshop....

You haven't got a preview in your temporary files' folder? My imagination can be very wrong.

Heres an earlier version, the proportions are pretty much as they are now. The additional mist layer is just above the lake so as you can see that it dose not intersect with the foreground area. What I am wondering is whether it will have a render impact on the foreground even though it (should) have no effect on the colouring of the foreground trees and hill side. Even though it should have no direct effect on the foreground dose it still get calculated and then get discounted hence seriously boosting the render time. If it wil be calculated but have no effect I will render below the red line as a separate pass and comp in P'shop.

I bet that the foreground will render very fast ,-) Else, go for it.

Oh, wow, beautiful scene so far.  That looks incredibly realistic.

Nice scene.

I'm guessing that it will simply render faster where the mist is not impacting anyway so probably no real way of speeding it up.

wow, this is very beautiful indeed so far :)
however, if it is not too late, I would recommend making the lake a little smoother. smooth lakes and mist go hand in hand
