Title: Converting Terragen EXR file from 32bit to 16bit
Post by: daudvyd on August 30, 2018, 01:50:19 PM
Can anyone recommend a way to convert a Terragen EXR file from 32bit to 16bit? I do not have Adobe Photoshop. I have Aurora HDR, which currently cannot read floating point 32 bit files. When I try to convert with the free HDR package, Picturenaut, the loss in dynamic range seems unnecessarily large. Does Planetside offer or recommend any such tools? Anyone else?

Usually when saving EXR files out of Terragen you get a pop up dialogue box asking you if you want 16bit or 32bit, so you could just save it as 16bit to start with.

For automatic rendering saves, you can set the file type and bit depth in Edit -> Preferences -> File Saving

As for Apps that convert EXR's you might try IrfanView.  I havn't tried it myself in years, but it says on the Plug-ins Page:
"EXR - (version 4.22): allows IrfanView to read EXR files"

Thank you. I'll try that plugin. I have several 32 bit files that took forever to render and post-processing software that--to my surprise--can't read 32 bit files.

Also Natron is a compositing software like Nuke, but open source (free) and that should load 32-bit EXR.
