Title: Help Needed: Making Hanging Glaciers
Post by: Cyber-Angel on October 23, 2007, 11:22:57 PM
I have a question I am thinking about getting back into doing mountain terrain again, but I would like to know how to make a hanging glacier like this one http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~luthi/projects/hanging.html I am sure that its possible.

Regards to you.

Hi, I hope i can help. I managed this sort of effect once before (here is the picture: http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1357490") by creating a power fractal terrain, and placing a strata shader over the top of it. I also had a snow layer, and used the 'intersect underlying' feature to achieve an embossed snow effect. When i applied the strata shader however i found my layer of snow broken up and it looked quite like chunks of ice. I havn't got much experience with the strata shader, but i reckon if you can get a big enough strata layer to appear, and using the embossed snow technique, you could get something remotely similar to what your looking for. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I think using "Intersect Underlying" is the key here.  I would really recommend playing with that.
