Hey I wanted to give a shout out for the series "This is Us". We do the VFX work on the show and I wanted to mention that we've been using Terragen for several big scenes over the course of this seasons episodes. If you watch the show, it's the scenes that take place in Vietnam. The scenes were shot at a lake in the San Fernando Valley. Except for the actual lake, immediate foreground and actors, we replaced the rest of the background with a more jungle like environment created with Terragen. I'll post some before and after screen shots next week.

Very cool...I look forward to seeing those.
Definitely looking forward to seeing images of this!

Here's a before and after of one of the shots we did earlier this season.
Here's another..
Nice! The blend of the foreground veg with background in the 2nd shot is particularly good.

Cool. Thanks for showing.
Agree, thanks for sharing these..most encouraging...
Great work!
I guess there is quite a bit of grading and roto involved as well?
Thanks for the pictures. Very cool!
Thanks for sharing. Impressive work!
Thanks guys, the client was happy with the work.
To respond to Cyphyr's question, yes there was quite a bit of roto. Since the production didn't want to use green/blue screen, we had to pretty much roto everything. Additionally on the shots with the helicopter we had to track and add 3D rotor blades since roto-ing the heavily motion blurred blades was impossible.
All the plants and trees were SpeedTree assets.
We used Maya to render animated foreground trees/plants assets in shots that required it.
In all we've done over 250 shots requiring Terragen generated backgrounds over 5 episodes.
Nice work.
Thanks for your explanation. But what is roto?
Roto (rotoscoping) is an animated mask that crops out (usually foreground) elements so they can be treated as separate layers and composited over other rendered or filmed layers. Originally, animators projected photographed live-action film images onto a glass panel and traced over the image to create a realistic animation.
Great to see Terragen used so comprehensively.
Thanks Richard.
heh heh, Richard was up first...
I'd love to see some of the work others have done for their film or tv projects. :)
Check out this link, it gives a breakdown of how we were using Terragen for "This Is Us" (there's no audio)

Fantastic! Can we share that video?

Beautiful work. Easy to see why the client was happy.
Wow First Class...KUDOs to the compositors and Terragen...super real!
Fantastic! Good to see TG at work.
Great work.
Hey Oshyan,
No problem about sharing the video. FYI, we are making a new one with work from this latest episode (used path tracing on some of the shots for that one).

Damn, I cannot watch the video. Getting a "Access Denied" message when I click the link.
Did you by any chance upload it somewhere else? Vimeo or Utube, perhaps?

I could see it yesterday, but now it's denied indeed. Strange.
I was able to view it yesterday as well
Ditto. and most disappointing as I wanted to show it to a film pal to illustrate to her what TG could be used for in film.
Sorry guys i'm Not sure why the link broke. I'll find out what's going on and post a new link Monday. Have a great weekend!
Niel
Sorry for the delay. I've updated the video to include a breakdown from the latest episode of "This Is Us", and uploaded it to Vimeo. Here's the link:

Awesome work! Thanks for posting.
Excellent, thanks! Shared to social media. :)

So cool!... Im my next live I hope to learn all those technics too. ;) Still impressed about the accuracy how foreground objects can be cut out to be placed into different background without green-/bluescreen.
