It looks like maybe some textures are either missing or haven't been lined up in the MTL properly.  A popular choice here is using PoseRay to run your object through first to get things lined up and then importing into TG2.  Once in TG2, I suggest saving the object as a TGO and use it instead of the object.

No, I think you're having trouble with the alpha (transparency) information on the pine needles. TG2's handling of alpha data is a little sketchy - it doesn't seem to handle partial transparency well. Rework the alpha texture and change it to a black and white image, as opposed to grayscale. If that doesn't do it, try shaving back the edges of the leaf areas in the alpha texture, so any areas that were meant to be partially transparent are removed.

By the way, fmtoffolo had a nice pine tree for sale, I think at Renderosity.

Mr. Miley has a 'No Leaf Tree' that looks wind-blown - it's pretty cool. There's also the free XFrog Silver Maple that I used in the 'Great Pumpkin' pic. If you want it and answer in the next few minutes, I can FTP the .tgo of it up to my site and you can get it from there. (I'm just about to do some work on the site, that's why I say answer quickly.)   :)

How about importing an existing tree model of yours into one
of your highend modeling apps and modify it there? For example
removing the leaves and some branches/twigs ,you could also
cut the trunk off and make some jagged end easily. Then you
could replace the bark texture with a dead wood or weathered
wood tex and viola. ;)

or you could load a regular tree that has leaves and everything in TG2 and delete the default shader that controls the leaves....

should work....

it just struck me....

j - That's how I created the Silver Maple - I just left the leaves off. Trick is finding a model that looks ok without the leaves.

d - I don't know. I think the model's leaves would still be rendered, they just wouldn't be textured. You need to modify the model itself, I think.

I agree with you Harvey and most likely it would be best
to sculpt/model one from scratch.Which would allow
close ups aswell.

Removing leaves from existing trees: Poseray only exports visible groups! :)

Look in the Groups tab. If you don't have groups for the trunk(s) and leaves then Rearrange materials -> groups
Make the leaves group invisible (Click on the box to the left of the group name)
Smooth the normals while you're there and export.

File size for my test object dropped 3Mb

I just go into the multishader for the leaves and dial em tranparent....if you don't have low fog it's a fast work-a-round..oh now that's a good trick Ben

Or in some cases you might even get away with something
like this. ;D (nikita's recipe of course)

Actually your way is better as my way adds render time with the always expensive alpha channel transparency and yours saves time with none and, as a plus, is a smaller object...I'm on the bandwagon on this.. ...
