As the title of this post says I have been playing with translucence in stones using maps and here's a lil render that illustrates it quite well. The translucent effect seems to appear mainly on the more vertical slopes,,,gueass it's an angle of incidence[sp?] thing....comments and critiques quite welcome.. ...
Very impressive project ...... possible .tgd maybe

It's on my workstation and I'll have to zip it with the maps I used but...yeah...stay tuned...try t do it tonight.. ...
I dont get it.....what are you trying to do??...
nice lighting tho...
I had some luck getting translucence to almost be transparent in the past with maps and I'm trying to see what circumstances cause it to work...for example in this render I did I have a soft shadow light inside a stone upper foreground, center left.. ...
I like the mood of this one....sorta like dooms day feeling...
Yeah...it does have that feeling...additional luminescence is supplied by those jutting up displacements the stones are around as I cranked the luminosity a bit...I was also very pleased with the sky...I find it difficult to get much beyond the most pedestrian clouds mostly...guess that's a matter of lots more test renders...LOL
Yeah those clouds look great indeed!
About your first picture: for the eye it looks rather more like specularity than translucency?
I'll have to take a look at your tgd back home. The bumpy soil looks very nice by the way. How does it look from a little bit higher (few meters)?

I like the displacements on your stones.
