A good idea for a poly object/populator is a poly card. So that displacement can be used with normals for such things as leaves on the ground, applying crinkle/lift displacement maps.
I don't know of this is possibly with current cards cause force displacement seems to make the card itself disappear besides it's shadow, additionally there is no mesh displacer.
I might add something like that.
I don't think there's a good reason to use a Card with "Force displacement". For that you should just use a displaceable Plane.

Yeah. I I tried using just height but it doesn't work well for any crinkly effects and still very much a flat card. Which is very noticeable if the terrain is anything but very smooth/flat.
