I made a piece of chainmail in Lightwave, then an ortho render in TG with an altitude gradient, and tiled the texture. Warped the image map, added some variance and set opacity and metalness in TG. Comes out pretty nicely (PT). I think Hannes also did this a while back.
Now it's a matter of making the right 'clothes', with a nice border.
Looks very nice.

Hi Ulco, yes, I did. Long time ago. :)
Some crits: The strap solution you made won't work, I'm afraid. Either you need very strong leather straps, or the shirt has to be like a sweater.
Real chainmail is bloody heavy, so usually there is no space between the shirt and the shoulder. Depending on the weaving direction, the chainmail will stretch more or less (not the metal, but the rings of course), so straps like yours would probably hang down a bit.
I once made the real thing, so I know, what it's like, and as you said I made a chainmail shader some time ago. I'll check it again and upload it into the file section, if you want to take a look.

Thanks Hannes. I know this guy's chainmail vest doesn't look very nice, but I was just testing the texture, metalness and bump. That's why I wrote that I have to do proper clothing now. It was all over the vest, so also the straps.
As I don't understand so much about the details of medieval clothing I can just say: Nice :)
