Title: Beginner guide.
Post by: Abderrahman Alterkawi on September 27, 2022, 06:27:04 PM
Hello everyone, have been interested in terragen for a while now, and only now planning to get more into it.
I am a professional cgi artist mainly in archviz. And am wondering about how to start learning terragen, do you guys have any recommendations for tutorials on learning it well, it seems that the only things online are dimitry's videos, however most of the beginner friendly ones are outdated from a couple of years ago.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome. As a pro in CGI, it won't be too hard to get to the prinicipal grips with Terragen. I would certainly start with some of the tutorials on the wiki page. The newer versions have extra's and some changes but the principle is basically the same, so all tutorials will be useful: Here is one: https://planetside.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=Tutorial_1:_Creating_Your_First_Scene (https://planetside.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=Tutorial_1:_Creating_Your_First_Scene)
And here's some more stuff to study: https://planetside.co.uk/terragen-resources/ (https://planetside.co.uk/terragen-resources/)
And detailed questions not answered in the tutorials can be asked here. Good luck, and do show your progress and any renders you make!

hi, I think the best place to start right now are the new video tutorials from planetside done by Kevin Kipper (I believe...)

https://planetside.co.uk/terragen-tutorials/
or got to the planetside youtube channel.
https://www.youtube.com/user/PlanetsideSoftware/videos
They describe the most complete scene building process with "all" bells and whistles and lots of useful techniques and how to-s.

Then these come to mind:

Jordan Thompson

Terratuts

Vladimir Chopine aka geekatplay

hth.
CHeers, Klaus

ps: and - of course - the tedious search through the forum for all kinds of special cases stuff

Once your through the basics the Terralive series was very good.  It's more Intermediate level, and was from the Terragen 2/3 days but I found this very helpful:

It costs $49 but it was well worth it:

Also some nice tools to help along the way listed on NWDA's resource page under Terragen: http://nwdagroup.com/resources/

I don't think specific shaders like that exsist, but rather all the nodes to create them. Here are some great links to the very nodes that create snow.
