Title: Desert Scene
Post by: joshbakr on February 27, 2008, 01:07:55 PM
Wanted to share the Image which I had questions about with the populations in the thread link below.

http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=3490.0 (http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=3490.0)

Any way here's the pic. I know it's far from perfect, but I think it turned out pretty good considering I still have a lot to learn. 4 crop renders totaling about 80 hours. Thanks to jcinbama for sharing the cactus and Ashundar for hosting it.

oh.....

I like this image..... the scale of the clouds are perfect... but the clouds need more detail.... how many samples do you use?

nice work ....

I really like the lighting and how shadows are filled....although I think the density of the bushes is a little high (considering that it is a desert setting)...

the clouds are great....did you use DOF on clouds??...they have a little blur feeling....I also have to agree with gastar about the detail in clouds...

good work overall! (**** 4 stars)

I like the lighting.  This is very close to realistic.

It in fact reminds me of many of the high desert areas I have been in. The term desert doesn't mean sand dunes and no vegetation. I have seen some desert areas in the spring that if you only saw it that one time would start an argument as to whether or not it was desert.

the clouds are great....did you use DOF on clouds??...they have a little blur feeling....I also have to agree with gastar about the detail in clouds... I think the clouds are just fine, I think that the lack of "hyper" detail adds to the realism.

good work overall! (**** 4 stars)

Living close to the desert, I can say this image is as close to realism as it can be. Some areas of the Sonoran desert are sparsely populated with vegetation; others are very dense with a myriad of varieties of beautiful plants - spring time 2008 has already arrived; and, as a result of our rains this winter, the blossoms are beginning to show all around. I would suggest that some of you have a look at the latest 'Arizona Highways' magazine and see how beautiful the desert actually is.

Clouds come in many varieties. From those I see here I can say they look very natural based on the lighting and atmosphere. In all, this is an outstanding representation of a desert region.

Thanks for coming to the rescue Bob and Tom!  ;D  Just for reference here's a pic I took while in Monument Valley Utah. Notice the Bush spacing please.

Believe me I know High Desert, thats why I moved to the Pacific Northwest. ;D That is a great reference shot, have you thought about trying to reproduce it?

What? You want me to pull what little bit of hair I have left out?  Yeah I have thought about it but that's as far as I got. LOL  Really I wish I knew enough about displacements to achieve the vertical rock detail, that would be awesome!

Between your capabilities and TU's, it looks possible to me.   ::) <-- Me just whistling and minding my own business.

The rock colour looks a little close to the sand colour for me (going off the reference pic where the rock is a deeper colour). Overall I'd say very well done. Congrats.  :)

Thanks but I didn't use the reference pic to create the scene or recreate the colors. I simply posted it to show plants and spacing in a desert area. Some people hear the word "desert" and think there should be nothing but sand and stone. Just throwing this in for good measure: If you notice in the Monument Valley pic the sand is the same color as the large fallen rocks and the mesas themselves. That also shoots the theory that the fake stones should be a different color than the sand around them. Which I've seen said many times.

I was going for Realism, not trying to make them look like the ones you do.

Apart from your clouds being too grainy, the picture is perfect.

Some improvements could be made, but this image is really solid and looks great.

Fantastic work already!
You could indeed raise the quality of your clouds and also add a little bit more (color)detail to the soil.
The vegetation looks very good.
Like Moodflow said it's solid work.

Would you like to share your cloudsettings with me? I'm curious how you get that billowy powdry look.
Thanks in advance.

Keep up the good work!

Martin

Thanks Martin,  Actually the clouds were rendered at 216 samples with the acceleration cache set to none highest quality. The Atmosphere samples were set to 100 and I seldom go over 75.  I think the sky portion took around 25 hours to render as it is and I don't really care to spend anymore time and power consumption at this point. I'll send you the  atmo/cloud clip via email.

I just sent the clip to your hotmail address.
