Title: TG2 running on 2 CPU quad core?
Post by: moodflow on March 16, 2008, 11:09:34 PM
Would TG2 run on a 2 CPU system (both CPU's being quad core)?  This would be once TG2 supports multiprocessing of course.

Heck, how would the operating system handle it?

My wife has access to some servers with these configs at her office and I'd love to try TG2 out on one.

Anyone have any inputs?

Hi,

AFAIK TG2 hasn't been tested on such a system yet, but I don't see why it wouldn't be fine.

Regards,

Jo

Awesome, would like to know if this works Moodflow :)

Thanks for your inputs Jo.

Yes, I'd love to test this out, but I'm not sure if I'll get the chance yet.  Still looking into it.  I "may" be able to get a used server with these specs for a discount.

If it were to work, TG2 would have 8 cores available, which would significantly speed renders up.

In the meantime, I am going to wait until TG2 supports multiprocessing.

EDIT: I misread your original post. I see you're talking about 8 cores. That hasn't been tested yet but I don't expect it to cause any problems.

I have sent early development builds to a couple of people with 4 cores (2 cores times 2 processors) and the results were good. Most testing has been done on only 2 cores (2 single-core processors), but 4-core tests showed the kind of speedup I expected.

Well this is definitely great news.  Many thanks for your inputs.

yeah time to stop crying about terragen needs for high processor power, its time to buy more cores!

I'm going to install and test version 1.9.04.1 on a dual quad system under xp64, shouldn't be any problem I guess but I'll let you know.

I am actually running T2 deep on an 8-core Mac Pro, and it runs great.  If I told you how much RAM was in there, you would see why I so eagerly await that email saying the full version is ready.  T2 only renders with one core for me on OS 10.5.2, whereas Maya for instance will max out all 8 cores on even a simple render.  I can't wait for multiple processor support, to see what can really be done especially for animation.
