Title: Initial observations of the TGP3 Alpha
Post by: cyphyr on April 30, 2008, 10:30:15 AM
Thanks for the update guys. On my system its rendering about twice as fast as it was before.

The water transparancy looks fabulous, although its not implimented properly for other surfaces yet. You can add the water shader to an imported obj for example but since the transparancy is partly depth dependant this causes unrealistic results in "glass windows" for instance. I'm guessing the final Gold release will have full transparancy in objects as well.

Clouds although rendering faster are rendering somewhat diferantly. Try rendering a cloud scene made in the last release and overlay a render made in the latest version. The new renders seem more contrasty/grainy etc. Another minor issue is that the "stay open" button in the (Cloud Fracle Shader v3) puts its window behind the main TG window when it looses focus.

Projects saved in TGP3 wont open properly in TG2 (not suprising really)

I realy like that the + & - buttons for zooming in and out of the preview are now the logical way round. Were we origenaly going to have the mini preview more navigateable?

I tried opening up my old Hay Wain scene and its crashes, think I'll re-build it using more optomised objects.

The highly reflective car project I was working on renders ok now, Looking forward to completeing that one.

All in all a major step forward, thanks Planetside.

Out of interest what is still to be finalised for the "Gold" release ??

"I'm guessing the final Gold release will have full transparancy in objects as well."  - I'm not sure we should assume this...or should we expect it?

What is TGP3?

This isn't even Beta yet.  Gold is after that.

The update page calls it that:
QuoteTerragen 2: Optional Update

Thanks, nikita.  Didn't read it.  Seems strange to call it that, but I guess it needs a name.  Sounds like TG3, almost.  Enough to make me wheezy.

We have released 3 versions of the Technology Preview thus far. The initial release was labelled Technology Preview 1 (1.8.64.1 or therabouts), the next was Technology Preview 2 (1.9.41.1 or so) and now there is Technology Preview 3. It's a pretty logical progression, and since they're all still Technology Previews (and not betas), it made sense to number them rather than give each a unique name.

Thank you for this Techno Preview.
I like The Software Update manager, the multi-thread rendering and the navigation Window.
Concerning the View menu, it will be cool to have a marker notification in the menu bar when you activate a view. This way, you know what Window is open or not.
