A post of what you're currently getting would help diagnose the problem.

Yes that would be helpful indeed.

I'm not entirely sure if you're looking for this effect but I can explain a little how I did the subsurface effects on this image:
http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=3991.msg41710#msg41710 (http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=3991.msg41710#msg41710)

As subsurface scattering color I chose an almost 50% gray with a tad green and red in it. As you can see the transparency depth is a bit high and therefore the subsurface colors are almost the same as the shoreline. Lowering transparency will add a little stronger effect.

The density color had a tad more red than the water's diffuse color and I attached a powerfractal (PF) as density shader.
The PF was stretched on the x-axis to get the look of "streams". Adjusting the contrast determines how sharp the lines in the streams are and also the whiter parts of the PF-function determine the density of the density color.
Then adjusting the amount of density color in the watershader tab will give you full control of appearance.

I hope some of this info helps, but like O_b said it might be useful if you post an example.
Good luck!
